Kenneled Dog ‘Goldie’ Eats Her Own Tail To Survive Abandonment

Forest City, IA – Goldie, an abandoned golden retriever from northern Iowa, was forced to eat her own tail to survive for three weeks in an outdoor kennel.

The poor pup was rescued (and is now recovering) at the Humane Society of North Iowa, but she’s left without half of her tail, which she was forced to eat after being abandoned in an outdoor kennel without food for weeks. People reports that Goldie’s bone was left painfully exposed.

Information released by the shelter shows that Goldie was discovered when a property landlord reached out to the Humane Society by phone to let them know that an evicted tenant had abandoned eight dirty and malnourished dogs at the property.

Goldie, who is seven, was one of them, and was locked in the kennel without food and limited water.

“Goldie’s story of survival shows us just how resilient this beautiful girl is,” said Sybil Soukup, executive director of the Humane Society, in a statement on the shelter’s official website. “She endured three dismal weeks of neglect and abandonment, confirming that pets are not disposable or something you leave behind when your life moves on.”

Goldie’s story was first picked up by local media outlets like KETV7, which reported that the poor pup was roughly 20 pounds lighter than a dog of her age and kind should normally be. Since being rescued, she has gained six pounds.

All of the other abandoned dogs have been placed in homes, and Goldie is sure to follow once her recovery is complete.

“She’s on the road to recovery in our care and is definitely looking forward to a new life with a forever family! Will it be with yours????” reads a post on the shelter’s Facebook page.
