‘StarCaft II: Heart of the Swarm’ Opening Cinematic Released

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is a little under two months out from its March 12 release date, and Blizzard is getting players ready by releasing the game’s opening cinematic.

Blizzard hasn’t been one to skimp on its cinematics, and that isn’t looking to change one bit in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. The cinematic, posted on StarCraft community site Team Liquid, is packed full of explosions, Zerg-Terran action, and a few brief glimpses at some of the game’s new units.

The intro focuses on Heart of the Swarm protagonist Kerrigan but not quite the same one we saw at the end of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm; the Kerrigan we see in the cinematic is once again the Queen of Blades, and she’s launching a full-on assault against Mengsk and his allies.

In an interview with Polygon, game director Dustin Browder described what StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm‘s opening cinematic means.

“One of the things we’re trying to convey is this sense of Zerg war,” Browder told the site. “To give you an idea of what it means to play this game [as the Zerg]. This is the power you will encapsulate. This is the strength and force of destruction you will rain down upon Mengsk and his Dominion.

“We’re really trying to capture that emotion, and at the same time set up the core problem of the game which is that Kerrigan does not actually have that power,” Browder added. “That’s the power she aspires to, but not the power she currently has in her hands. It’s a dream that she’s having of power yet to come. We can show you that fantasy, this is going to, hopefully, match your experience of destroying people with the Zerg.”
