Man With Assault Rifle At JC Penney Spurs Gun Control Debate

When you’re shopping at JC Penney you probably don’t expect to run into an assault rifles. Well, you probably don’t shop at the JC Penny in Riverdale, Utah.

KSL reports that a man was spotted walking down the aisles with an assault rifle on his back.

Shopper Cindy Yorgason spotted the man and took a few pictures.

Yorgason said:

“He had the assault rifle over his shoulder. He had a handgun on the right side of his belt along with at least one additional clip … He was in the wrong place and shouldn’t be doing this at this location.”

Yorgason said that the man was simply trying to return a gift at JC Penney. Maybe he forgot his receipt and wanted to make sure that the JC Penney employees didn’t turn him down. Or maybe he was just showing his support for gun rights.

Store employees identified the man as 22-year-old Joseph Kelley and said that he’s brought his guns into the store before.

Kelley said that he was trying to demonstrate how guns can be safe in the hands of a law-abiding citizen.

Kelley said that both the AR-15 and the handgun were unloaded and that he has a concealed carry permit.

Kelley said:

“I felt no negative vibes from anyone. I think it went rather surprisingly well.”

Here’s the photo of Kelley with an assault rifle at JC Penney.

Kelley isn’t the only one carrying around an assault rifle. Virginia lawmaker Joe Morrissey recently brought a rifle onto the floor of congress. Morrissey, however, had a different end goal in mind.

The Virginia lawmaker wanted to show how easy it was to carry an assault rifle around into public places.

Morrissey said:

“A lot of people don’t know that in many locations in the commonwealth, you can take this gun, you can walk in the middle of Main Street loaded and not be in violation of the law.”

What do you think about the assault rifle at JC Penney?
