Is This The Worst Miss In Soccer History? [Video]

During a friendly between Holland’s Ajax and the Brazilian side Vasco da Gama, the Amsterdam based side’s key midfielder Siem de Jong managed to miss one of the easiest chances in soccer history.

In the 59th minute, de Jong, who is the club’s captain, timed his forward run to perfection and was on the receiving end of an inviting cross from one of his colleagues, Ricardo van Rhijn, but then conspired to somehow smash the ball over the bar and away from goal. You can watch the horrific incident below.

Ajax, who were playing Vasco as part of a mid-season tour of Brazil, ultimately lost the encounter by one goal to nil, but it was de Jong’s miss from only two yards out which proved to be the game’s main talking point. To be fair to the Dutchman though, the pitch was particularly unplayable, as it was covered in sand.

The sides’ manager, Frank de Boer, stated afterwards, “The field was a sand box. But despite everything (the heat and the bad field), I’m satisfied because they worked hard. We were only sloppy in the standard situations. In those moments, the organization simply has to be there.”

However, despite his miss, de Jong’s suitors haven’t been put off of his talents, as the English Premier League’s Newcastle United are rumored to be on the brink of signing the 23 year-old midfielder for £9 million.

Do you think that you could have converted de Jong’s opportunity? Where does it rank in the great soccer misses of all time list?
