Les Miserables darling Anne Hathaway will reportedly star in the big screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.
Sources close to the production explained that Hathaway has already signed on to tackle a major role in the cinematic version of the classic play. According to Yahoo! News, The Iron Lady scribe Abi Morgan will tackle scripting duties on the upcoming project.
Debra Hayward’s production company Monumental Pictures will co-produce the film with Working Title. This essentially means that Anne Hathaway will be joining forces once again with the folks who brought Les Miserables to theaters.
Although news about the project is starting to make the rounds, there’s actually very little information about the project currently on the internet. Cinema Online explains that Working Title, Universal, and Hathaway’s representatives have yet to comment on the film.
It’s also currently unclear which character the actress will portray when Taming of the Shrew finally begins production.
Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first time Hollywood has attempted to make some box office case by bringing Shakespeare’s classic tale to the big screen. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton starred in the 1967 version of the tale from director Franco Zeffirelli.
Gil Junger’s 1999 flick 10 Things I Hate About You took the story and updated it for modern audiences. The film brought together a number of young and talented actors including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles, David Krumholtz, and the late Heath Ledger.
After an extremely busy year, Anne Hathaway doesn’t have much on her plate at the moment. The only thing Internet Movie Database has her attached to is the sequel to the animated hit Rio. The actress has previously expressed interest in Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse. However, that project is currently on hold.
