MC Hammer will perform alongside South Korean rapper PSY for this year’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
JustJared reports that the 50-year-old entertainer, most famous for his 1990 hit “U Can’t Touch This,” will take the stage at this year’s historic televised New Year’s celebration alongside “Gangnam Style” international sensation PSY. The New Year’s Rockin’ Eve gig actually counts as a reunion between the two stars, as they both performed the “Gangnam” horse dance together at the 2012 American Music Awards back in November.
Halfway through PSY’s performance of “Gangnam Style,” the lights went out on stage, and he was joined by MC Hammer. The song then became a mash-up of “Gangnam Style” and MC Hammer’s “2 Legit 2 Quit.” The homage may have been lost on younger viewers, but the performance was well-received.
The meet-up was also reportedly arranged by Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, reports CNN.
“Scooter Braun connected us, and [when] I spoke with Psy I knew right away that he is a good guy. I like working with good people … I loved doing it and we had a great time together,” Hammer said.
“Psy is fantastic. He’s shifted the planet. He’s got the whole world dancing. And it’s a rarity in this world. Only four people made that happen in history – James Brown, Michael Jackson, yours truly and Psy.”
PSY himself was also a bit star-struck by performing alongside MC Hammer. “Honestly, I practiced his move[s] 20 years ago,” Psy said. “So I’ve done that for 20 years.”
This year, New Year’s Rockin Eve will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest for the first time in light of Dick Clark’s death earlier this year. MC Hammer and PSY join an impressive list of celebrity performers, including Taylor Swift, The Wanted, Flo Rida, and Carly Rae Jepsen.
New Year’s Rockin Eve will air on Monday (December 31) at 8pm EST on ABC.
