Giant Effigies Of Harvey Weinstein, Nude Trump, Other Controversial Personalities Burned At UK Bonfire Night

A huge effigy of disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was burned at the stake at the annual Guy Fawkes Night in the United Kingdom. This year’s version of the traditional bonfire event also saw effigies of two world leaders engaged in a war of words, which many fear may lead to World War III, being burned.

The roughly 36-foot effigy shows Weinstein clad in only a white robe holding an Oscar while his privates were covered by a clapperboard with the words “Final Cut Scene #4” written on it. Behind the Weinstein effigy is a face of a woman, which likely signifies the victims of his supposed indecent actions.

Edenbridge Bonfire Society spokesperson Laura Burton-Lawrence said that they chose to burn Weinstein this year because “it was only fair that he got to see his comeuppance.” Gary Patterson, a spectator at the bonfire, explained that the effigy aims to draw attention to Weinstein’s behavior and is not a celebration of the disgraced movie magnate, ABC reported.

“Obviously, Harvey Weinstein is very vilified at the moment for what he’s been doing,” Patterson said. “And it’s not really a celebration of what he’s done but it’s to sort of draw attention to what he’s done and, hopefully, people in the future will sort of draw on this example, on this memory, of what he’s done wrong, and go forward from that.”

Weinstein is being accused by a number of women, including actresses, models, and employees, of sexual harassment and rape. The allegations first broke out in early October after the New York Times published an article saying Weinstein has been paying off his accusers for decades.

The article mentioned the supposed victims of Weinstein’s inappropriate actions as actresses Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan, model Ambra Battilana, and some of his former employees, namely Lauren O’Connor, Emily Nestor, Laura Madden, and Zelda Perkins.

Since then, a host of women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment. The growing list includes Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cara Delevigne, Lupita Nyong’o, Kate Beckinsale, Lena Headey, Eva Green, Heather Graham, Mira Sorvino, Rosanna Arquette, Claire Forlani, model and writer Zoe Brock, and French actors Lea Seydoux and Emma de Caunes. At present, there are over 50 accusers.

Lysette Anthony, Asia Argento, Annabella Sciorra, and at least a couple of women who have remained anonymous have accused Weinstein of rape.

While Edenbridge burned a Weinstein effigy, the folks in the town of Lewes paraded effigies of Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. In one of those effigies, the two world leaders were tied naked to a rocket with their genitals covered with the radiation warning signs. British Prime Minister Theresa May also had her own effigy at the Lewes Bonfire Night.

The yearly bonfire event is named after Guy Fawkes, one of a group of Catholic conspirators who wanted to dispose of King James, a Protestant. The plan to assassinate the king is now known as the Gunpowder Plot. Fawkes was supposed to light up barrels of gunpowder that would have blown up the House of Parliament, killing King James, However, Fawkes was captured and tortured until he revealed his co-plotters. The conspirators were then sentenced to their gruesome deaths.

After the conspirators’ death in 1605, Londoners were made to light bonfires every 5th of November as a form of celebration. The tradition has stuck until today and has since been known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night, and Plot Night.
