Rosie O’Donnell Says Megyn Kelly Didn’t Do Enough To Defend Her Against Donald Trump During 2015 Debate

Rosie O’Donnell says Megyn Kelly didn’t do enough to defend her against Donald Trump when she was moderating the first GOP presidential debates in August 2015. It was an infamous moment in which Megyn opened with a direct question at then-candidate Donald Trump. She confronted him about his treatment of women and how he calls them disparaging names, such as “fat pigs,” “dogs,” “slobs,” and “disgusting animals.” Trump answered, “Only Rosie O’Donnell.”

In an interview with New York Daily News, Rosie O’Donnell is speaking out about that debate Megyn Kelly was a part of with her Fox News colleagues. O’Donnell thinks Kelly had a deer in headlights look when Trump shot back with his answer. Visibly annoyed, Trump went on a rant about he was being unfairly treated with that type of question, but Megyn called him out on the fact he hadn’t just railed against Rosie in his personal insults against women. His Twitter feed had an archive of insults against women, but he vehemently denied being sexist.

Rosie O’Donnell believes Megyn Kelly had a perfect chance to discredit Donald Trump at that point, but she dropped the ball. In her view, Megyn was taken aback by Trump’s answer when he named her in the debate as the only one he’d say those things about. After all, the two had been archenemies since 2006 and known for throwing barbs at one another.

The comedienne goes on to say that Kelly acted as if Trump’s response of “Only Rosie O’Donnell” was impossible to argue against. Rosie didn’t see a lot of confidence in Megyn during that debate.

“To see that debate when everyone laughed when he said ‘Only Rosie O’Donnell’ and…little Megyn Kelly with her eyes like a deer in the f–king headlights — as if, ‘Only Rosie O’Donnell’ is a justifiable comeback. Megyn Kelly as a woman should have had much more of a backbone than she did. She’s a Fox News apologist…I don’t believe that Megyn Kelly has all of a sudden ascended to a higher consciousness and understands the big plan.”

The 55-year-old insists that Megyn doesn’t understand the “big plan” and that she’s all about herself and not other women who’ve suffered. She likens the former Fox News journalist’s reality to “living in a kind of Barbie existence and has lived in a Barbie existence until she decided it was to time to change it up.”

Megyn Kelly now works at NBC and hosts the 9 a.m. hour of Today. The jury is still out on how successful the show is going to be, but reports every week indicate things are off to a rough start. Ratings have increased slightly in the last few weeks, however. Kelly was prepared to get clobbered in the headlines because she knew the multi-million dollar salary she was accepting from the network would make her a huge target. Her hosting duties on Today are also an extreme departure from being a hard news journalist who was immersed in politics. She’s trying to fit a different mold. One that is warmer, fun, and more versatile. People are slow to warm up to Megyn’s reinvented image, but no one is giving up on her yet.

Do you think Megyn Kelly could’ve done more to defend Rosie O’Donnell against Donald Trump in the 2015 debate?
