‘Z Nation’: Friday’s Episode Features Surprising Death [Spoilers]

The entire group of Z Nation‘s main characters had really close calls with death on Friday night’s episode, with each fighting a foe that could have easily done them in. You could almost feel a death coming on before the episode was finished and it did — Lucy died of old age. The episode titled “Back from the Undead” did bring someone back, but it took one of the main players in return.

It was a death, but it was unlike one that you would expect from Z Nation. There was no gore involved, not a beheading, or anything that resembled a dismemberment of a body. Lucy shrivels up a little more each time she had to bite her father, Murphy, to save him from dying from a zombie bite, or “Z” bite. Murphy is no longer immune to the Z bites and when he was bitten he started to die.

By Lucy biting Murphy’s forearm like it was a juicy chicken drumstick, it brought back that immunity for Murphy. The Z bite finally started to clear up and he lived, but Murphy was so far gone that Lucy needed to bite him a few times to keep him alive. But after each bite, her face would emerge and she had more and more wrinkles. You could also see that she was becoming frail and losing energy. Lucy was aging rapidly and she aged herself right into the grave. When Murphy recovers from his Z bite infection and sees his daughter Lucy with the appearance of a 90-year-old woman, it was a tearjerker for sure.

The AV Club puts Lucy’s death as one of the more surprising deaths for Z Nation, much like Garnett in Season 1. Just like Garnett, Lucy starts to be the center of the storyline and the next minute she’s gone. Her death is right up there with Cassandra’s death as well.

Fans of Z Nation have literally had the pleasure of watching Lucy from conception to death, which happened over a span of time that covered a few seasons. In Z Nation‘s story timeline, it was about four years. That was made known in this episode when Murphy tells Lucy how her mother gave birth to her four years ago.

Lucy was conceived with the cameras going, and while they might not have offered a blow-by-blow play of Murphy in that tent with Lucy’s mother at the time, you knew what they were doing. Lucy’s mother’s pregnancy would give the movie Rosemary’s Baby a run for their money. Her mother’s pregnancy was a weird and creepy one, or should it be said that Lucy was the most bizarre fetus seen this side of the Twilight Zone. As a newborn, she was one creepy infant with razor sharp teeth and eyes that mirrored death.

Instead of Lucy continuing on in life as a monster, she changed, and other than being blue and having a relationship with all the zombies, she was a normal and very pretty child. She grew into a gorgeous teen, even with her blue hue, and continued on to become a fine looking, albeit still blue, woman.

From the very beginning, even before Lucy popped out of her mother’s womb, she would shapeshift her mother’s belly, actually pushing up against it so you could see the outline of her face. This was one eerie pregnancy for Lucy’s somewhat deranged mother. As a fetus, Lucy was also able to communicate through her mother’s stomach, pointing in the direction of her father Murphy when her mother was on a hunt to find him. Most pregnancies come with such mundane things as morning sickness, swollen ankles, and hemorrhoids, but when Lucy’s mother was pregnant with fetus Lucy, it was like a smart pregnancy, like a smartphone or smart TV.

Lucy’s demise was a sad scene on Friday night, but this is the show Z Nation, and yes, she could come back, or not. That beautiful teen from a few weeks back was well up in her 90s in this episode after biting her father numerous times. It almost made you forget how half of the crew was fighting a Frankenstein-like monster with four arms, four hands, and a couple of heads, one of which was embedded onto his back and talked. This monster had what was left of a living doctor morphed into its back and it carried on a conversation with Roberta.
