Guillermo Del Toro Introduces The Short Film That Inspired ‘Mama’ [Video]

Director Guillermo Del Toro has built a strong and dedicated following thanks to such memorable cinematic endeavors as Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and The Devil’s Backbone. As such, anything with his name attached to it is sure to get some attention.

Such is the case of Mama, the upcoming thriller directed by Andres Muschietti. Starring the increasingly prolific Jessica Chastain, the film tells the story of a family who attempt to raise two little girls who were left alone in a forest for over five years.

The Pacific Rim director was so impressed with Muchietti’s original short film that he produced the full-length feature. The movie is currently scheduled to arrive in the US next month.

To help spread the word about the upcoming horror flick, Guillermo Del Toro has released the original short online. The clip even comes with an introduction by the Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker himself, who describes the original Mama as “one of the scariest little scenes I’ve every seen.” The clip was recently made available on the movie’s official YouTube page.

Culture has the following synopsis:

“Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

“As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.”

The short film, complete with introduction by Guillermo Del Toro, has been included below. Keep in mind that the clip is a little frightening, so be sure to take note of who’s standing around while you’re watching it.

The full-length version of Mama arrives in theaters on January 18, 2013. Director Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim will hit cinemas across the US on July 12, 2013.
