Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Terrifying Cancer Scare

Kelly Clarkson is opening up about a terrifying cancer scare she had 11 years ago that almost ruined the moment she won her very first Grammy Award. Kelly spoke candidly this week about being told she “might” have had cancer in 2006, just hours before taking home two Grammys.

Shortly before winning both Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (for “Since U Been Gone”) and Best Pop Vocal Album (for Breakaway) as well as performing the emotional track “Because of You” live during the broadcast, Clarkson revealed that she was told the horrifying news that she may have had cancer.

“I was told I might have cancer that day,” Kelly recently told Entertainment Weekly when recalling winning her first and second Grammy Awards at the outlet’s A-List event series. “It was really horrible.”

Understandably, Clarkson admitted that she was so upset by the news that she couldn’t stop crying that night. “I had to have my makeup redone three times,” she said.

The former American Idol winner then heartbreakingly confessed that winning two Grammys during the broadcast made her even more worried that she was about to die because she felt as though God was giving her one last celebration before she passed away.

“I kept winning!” she said of taking home the awards for both Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album in 2006, admitting that her family has a history of cervical and ovarian cancer.

Clarkson previously opened up about her cancer scare earlier this year in an interview with Billboard.

The “Love So Soft” singer, who has gone on to win another Grammy award as well as receiving multiple nominations since her terrifying night in 2006, revealed to the magazine in February that she “freaked out” after being told the news.

“I was like, ‘Wow, so young.’ I was just completely freaking out,” Kelly said. “Then when I won, I thought, ‘Oh my God. This is like God giving me one more thing before something horrible happens.'”

But, fortunately, all turned out well for the talented singer as Kelly confirmed that she went back to the doctor’s office the following day where she was then told that there had been a mix-up with her test results.

“They apologized for mixing up results. And I was like, ‘Are you for real?!’ I was like, ‘You completely ruined my entire [Grammys experience],'” she recalled. “That was a big dream!”

“You think it would’ve been the greatest night ever for an artist, and then it was like a joke… like, ‘This is my last hurrah!'” Kelly continued in the candid interview back in February. “I was so dramatic about it because I was 20-something and scared. It was so weird. I don’t even remember anything but being terrified.”

Clarkson has since gone on to marry husband Brandon Blackstock, with whom she has two children, and just released her latest album Meaning of Life. Next, she’ll be trying her hand at coaching on The Voice.

After appearing on the NBC multiple times over the past few seasons, including serving as a mentor to help current coaches Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus, and Jennifer Hudson, last week, Clarkson will be joining as a coach for the first time for Season 14 in 2018.

And it sounds like she’s not going to hold back when it comes to telling the contestants how she really feels about their performances.

Kelly recently teased that she’s not afraid to be mean when she has to be, revealing that she’s planning to borrow a few judging skills from former American Idol judge Simon Cowell.

Season 14 of The Voice is expected to debut on NBC in February 2018.
