The Duggar Family Has Incredibly Strict Clothing Rules And Jinger Duggar Continues To Ignore Them

For those familiar with the Duggar family from 19 Kids & Counting and its spinoff Counting On, it is well-known that the conservative Christian clan have incredibly strict rules, especially when it comes to clothing. However, rebel daughter Jinger Duggar-Vuolo continues to make headlines by wearing pants, shorts, and heels; and fans are starting to wonder if there is an actual dress code or if the modest clothing is simply a preference.

According to Romper, Michelle Duggar said that when the kids were starting to get older and grow up, the entire family discussed the clothing rules and decided to “wear modest dress” as a group.

“For us, we felt like we needed to be covered from our neck to below our knees mainly because God talks about the thigh being uncovered, and how that’s nakedness and shame,” Duggar wrote on a TLC post.

Because of that belief, the Duggar family dress code is always to keep thighs and torsos covered.

In a 2012 Duggar family blog post, they shared that the preference for modest clothing wasn’t exactly a rule to be enforced, but instead guidelines that everyone chose to follow. Jinger Duggar-Vuolo wrote at the time that her parents taught them the importance of being modest, which is why the kids all decided to wear conservative clothing, even modest swimsuits.

The Duggar girls even coined the term “modern modest,” which was their description of fashionable clothing that still covered them up in accordance with the family guidelines.

In the book Growing Up Duggar, the four oldest daughters (Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger) wrote that they aren’t ashamed of their bodies, but their decision to wear modest clothing was because they believe the opposite. They believe their bodies are a special gift from God that they only share with their husbands.

Since Duggar-Vuolo married Jeremy Vuolo last November, the reality star has made it clear that she isn’t quite as conservative as the rest of her family when it comes to fashion.

However, the Hollywood Gossip reports that just because Duggar-Vuolo is doing things differently, it doesn’t mean it has strained her relationship with her parents. Another part of their belief system is that once a daughter gets married, she is under the guidance of her husband, which means Duggar-Vuolo’s parents would never interfere. If the 23-year-old’s husband is okay with his wife wearing pants, then that’s all there is to it.

A long-time family friend recently answered questions during an Ask Me Anything segment on Reddit and claimed that Duggar-Vuolo and her husband may do things their own way and don’t believe exactly as her parents do, but they have no plans to break away from her family completely.
