Trump’s $1.75 Million White House Furniture Shopping Spree: Did Taxpayers Fund It?

President Donald Trump has spent $1.75 million on furniture for the White House, as well as redecoration, but the question remains if taxpayers picked up the bill. According to NBC News, Trump’s $1.75 million shopping spree included items like $17,000 custom rugs, as noted by government records. The records do not indicate if President Trump dipped into his falling net worth to fund the $1.75 million purchase, or if taxpayers will foot the big bill.

The records also contain cryptic descriptions to indicate what was purchased, such as $7,000 for “furniture pedestals.” The biggest single expense was for the amount of $291,000, paid to a business providing office walls. That purchase could be related to the U.S. Trade Representative. There was also a $5,000 expenditure for wallpaper, as well as a $12,800 custom conference table created by the same firm that former President Richard Nixon used in 1969, although the company noted, “Nixon paid for the table himself.”

Although the $1.75 million that President Trump has spent on White House redecoration since the inauguration is only slightly more than the $1.5 million President Barack Obama spent early in his presidency, New York Magazine reports that Mr. Obama paid for certain items out-of-pocket, not via the taxpayers. It’s not clear if Mr. Trump will make the same decision.

Trump’s spending was discovered via a General Services Administration database, which noted a contract for almost $240,000 from an office furniture dealer in Virginia with the description of “wood office furniture manufacturing” for the item. There is also a listing for $25,000, with the description of the item reading only a cryptic “case good furniture.”

Descriptions of the purchases indicate that they could be used for the residential mansion, such as $29,000 for “upholstered household furniture manufacturing” or the $10,000 for floor coverings listed. As seen in the above photo, President Trump was photographed leaving the Oval Office of the White House on Wednesday, October 25. Trump was preparing to board Marine One to travel to Dallas for a fundraiser.

Meanwhile, reactions to Trump spending $1.75 million on furniture and other White House redecoration is getting a big reaction on Facebook. Comments on Twitter can be viewed in the below tweets about Trump spending $1.75 million.
