Wesley Mathews: Father Chose Not To Wake Wife, A Registered Nurse, As Sherin Mathews Choked To Death On Milk

New details on the death of toddler Sherin Mathews are raising questions about why Wesley Mathews chose not to wake his wife, a registered nurse, and instead reportedly watched as his young adopted daughter choked to death on milk that she had been forced to drink.

The body of 3-year-old Sherin Mathews was found near Richardson, Texas, earlier this week, bringing an end to a search for the missing girl and raising a slew of new questions about her death. Wesley Mathews had originally told police that he put his daughter outside as punishment when she would not drink her milk, leading to suspicion that the girl had died in the coyote-infested area around their home. But after the toddler’s body was found, Wesley changed his story and claimed that the girl choked to death after he force-fed her milk.

As the Dallas News noted, that story raises new questions about why Wesley Mathews chose not to wake up his wife, Sini Mathews, who worked as a registered nurse at Dallas Children’s Medical Center. Wesley Mathews allegedly told police that Sherin died from choking after he “partially assisted” her drinking milk in the family’s garage in the early morning hours of October 7. Wesley said he then took the girl’s body from the home, and waited several hours to call the police.

As to why he was feeding his daughter in the family’s garage at 3 a.m., Wesley Mathews reportedly told police that the girl had a special diet after being adopted from India severely malnourished, the Telegraph reported.

Sherin Mathews’ adopted mother was reportedly sleeping through the entire incident, and does not face any charges.

As the Dallas News noted, the story about the girl choking and Wesley Mathews not waking his wife has raised more suspicions, and police may still be skeptical that Wesley Mathews is telling the truth about how his adopted daughter died.

“It is unclear whether authorities believe Wesley Mathews’ new account,” the report noted. “Autopsy results that will determine Sherin’s cause of death are pending.”

The case of Sherin Mathews has drawn international attention, with many news outlets in the United States following every development and many news organizations from India also covering the young girl’s tragic death.

Wesley Mathews is being held on $1 million bail for the death of Sherin Mathews.
