Katie Holmes’ Play Closes Early Due To Poor Ticket Sales

A Broadway play starring Katie Holmes is coming to an early end because of poor ticket sales. The show is being canned just six weeks following its debut, according to an announcement by its producers on Thursday.

Dead Accounts was originally intended to be a stunning return to the spotlight for Holmes following her very public divorce from fellow actor Tom Cruise. Sadly, even the public’s love affair with Katie Holmes could not save the production.

An article by The Daily Mail writes that the play was originally slated to run through February 24, but lackluster ticket sales led to the show’s final performance being moved to January 6.

Upon the play’s closing, Katie Holmes will have graced the stage for a mere 44 regular performances and 27 preview shows.

Dead Accounts suffered heavily last week by drawing the lowest attendance of any show currently playing on Broadway. With only 38.1 percent of its seats filled, the Music Box Theater production brought in less than 25 percent of its potential earnings.

Jeffrey Finn, producer for Dead Accounts, expressed kind words and sadness in a statement regarding the early closure.

“I am extremely proud of this production and the cast. Theresa Rebeck and Jack O’Brien have created an inspiring and hilarious new play and we are all sad to see Dead Accounts end on Broadway. I look forward to working with this remarkably talented cast and creative team again very soon.”

According to The New York Times, from the November 29 opening performance onward, the Broadway production garnered mixed reactions from reviewers. Ben Brantley, a reviewer for the paper, was unimpressed with his viewing and said the show “seems to float out of memory even as you’re watching it.”

Dead Accounts was written by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Jack O’Brien. Co-starring Norbert Leo Butz, the play follows the story of a prodigal son making his return home to Cincinnati from New York City.
