Benedict Cumberbatch Talks About His ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Villain, We Learn Nothing

Benedict Cumberbatch recently sat down alongside Star Trek Into Darkness co-star Alice Eve to talk about their respective characters in the upcoming film, but we didn’t really learn anything new about Cumberbatch’s villain.

The new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer debuted online today, and though it was pretty awesome when all is said and done, it taught us virtually nothing about the film. Internet nerds can dissect the trailer frame-by-frame all they want, but they aren’t going to be any richer for it. The film’s central enigma remains: Who is Benedict Cumberbatch playing? Official materials say “John Harrison,” but this is an obvious misdirect since it was confirmed by the film’s producers that the villain is part of Star Trek canon.

Other interesting possibilities floated have been Khan (too easy) and Gary Mitchell (interesting, but denied). Some crazy folk on the Internet have even said Star Trek: Next Generation cap Jean-Luc Picard, and to them I say, “you are silly, sir.”

In any case, the interview with Alice Eve and Cumberbatch is worth watching, just don’t expect any major hints from the sit-down. Star Trek Into Darkness has also launched the viral marketing domain AreYouThe1701.com, which sounds all mysterious and ominous, but doesn’t actually contain anything other than the ability to register for updates.

Coming Soon reports that Star Trek Into Darkness will open on May 17, and stars John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Peter Weller.

SuperHeroHype gives the synopsis:

“The film finds the crew of the Enterprise called back home where they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization that has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

“With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

“As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
