‘The Originals’ Spoilers: EP On Klaus Mikaelson’s Sacrifice And Saying Goodbye To Hope

The Originals Season 5 will be quite different now that the Mikaelson siblings are separated. Not only did they have to part ways to prevent the Hollow from returning, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) had to say goodbye to his daughter, Hope (Summer Fontana). In an interview with Yahoo TV, executive producer Michael Narducci explained why the family was torn apart again. He also discussed Hope going to Mystic Falls and how Klaus might react to losing his little girl.

Possible spoilers might be ahead. If you don’t want any information on what could happen on the Vampire Diaries spinoff, then stop reading.

Vincent’s (Yusuf Gatewood) spell worked, and Hope was saved in the Season 4 finale. However, it meant that four of the Mikaelson siblings had to part ways, promising never to see each other again. If they do, then there is a chance the Hollow could piece herself back together. Once again, Klaus would be separated from his daughter. For the family that swore to always stay together, it was a heartbreaking finale.

The showrunner was asked why it was decided to take the four siblings and separate them in that way. It was the ultimate sacrifice, especially for Klaus. Hope’s parents wanted her to live a happy and peaceful life. Due to who the Mikaelsons are, that would be nearly impossible. Also, the fact that Klaus has so many enemies throughout the centuries he has been a vampire, Hope would always be a target.

“Throughout the life of our show, they’ve always had access to one another. They’ve always said, ‘We’re going to stay together.’ And yet anyone in their orbit has suffered terribly. So, we wondered if by introducing this 7-year-old child who has her own sense of morals and her own desire to grow up and have a life of happiness and fulfillment — and Hayley and Klaus both want her to have a life of peace and happiness and fulfillment — it may be the Mikaelson way of doing things was perhaps not in keeping with what are Hope’s best interests.”

In The Originals, Klaus has always done everything to keep the family together. Last season, he was taken from his daughter for five years. Just when he reunited with Hope and was bonding with her, the characters were forced to go their separate ways. Klaus feels things deeply, and the love he has for Hope was unlike anything he had ever felt before. Could losing his daughter change him in Season 5?

“Without guessing what they’re going to do in Season 5, we actually wrote a scene that ended up getting cut from the episode where Klaus starts to return a little bit to his basic instinctive ways. It might be that we will return to Klaus, who’s a little bit lost and a little bit lacking in purpose because he’s isolated and he’s alone and he’s given up access to this little girl who was his pride and joy and was his purpose throughout the season, and actually for the past four seasons.”

Michael Narducci added that in order for it to be a true sacrifice, Klaus had to give up something. There is nothing more precious than a child. The writers felt denying Klaus the joy of being a father to be the most poetic version of his sacrifice. As for Hayley and Hope, separating mother and child was too heartbreaking for them to even consider.

How will Klaus react to being away from his little girl? How will he deal with the emptiness, frustration, anger, and sadness? Will he revert back to his old ways? Fans will have to wait until the Originals Season 5 premiere to find out.

What did you think of Klaus being separated from Hope and the Mikaelson siblings in The Originals? What would you like to see happen in Season 5?
