‘Roseanne’ Reboot: Roseanne Barr And Sara Gilbert Head Back To Work, Welcome Writers Back For Season 10

The Roseanne revival is in full swing—and Sara Gilbert is front and center. ABC’s long-awaited reboot of Roseanne Barr’s long-running 1980s/’90s sitcom about a blue collar, Midwestern family is now one step closer to production.

Gilbert, who played middle child Darlene Conner for nine seasons on the original ABC comedy, took to Twitter to post a rare selfie of herself standing outside of the new Roseanne writers’ room. Sara captioned the picture with, “First day!!! Welcome writers! #roseanne #season10.”

Roseanne fans can thank Gilbert for the revival of the beloved ABC sitcom. Earlier this year, Sara reunited with her TV dad, John Goodman, on an episode of her current CBS daytime talk show, The Talk. Gilbert and Goodman reprised their Roseanne characters, Dan and Darlene Conner, in a comedy sketch on the Emmy-winning daytime chat fest, and that spawned talk of the Roseanne revival. During an interview with host Julie Chen, Goodman said he’d be on board “if we could get everyone together,” while Gilbert added, “Your only fear is you don’t want to do a bad version because you don’t want to damage what’s been done.”

It’s not surprising that Sara Gilbert is front and center for the first day of writing work on the Roseanne revival. In addition to helping plant the seed for the reboot, Sara Gilbert is an executive producer on the reboot alongside original series’ EPs Tom Werner, Roseanne Barr, and sitcom veteran Bruce Helford. Actress-comedienne Whitney Cummings will share showrunner duties with Helford, according to Deadline.

Like Gilbert, Barr also took to Twitter to express excitement over her return to work, writing: “First day with writers!! #fun #exciting.”

In a 2009 blog post, Barr previously detailed her dream storylines should there ever be a Roseanne revival. According to Deadline, Barr imagined sisters Roseanne and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) opening the first medical marijuana dispensary in their Lanford hometown, and Goodman’s Dan reappearing alive after faking his death. Barr also wrote of David (Johnny Galecki) leaving Darlene for a woman half his age and Darlene ultimately coming out.

While the writers seem to just be getting started, spoilers for the Roseanne reboot have already started to leak out. TV Line reported that a search is currently on for a young actress and actor to play the children of Gilbert and Galecki’s characters. Darlene and David’s premature baby, Harris, was introduced in the 19th episode of Season 9 of Roseanne, but now it appears that somewhere along the couple also had a son.

With most of the show’s original stars now on board for a 10th season (Galecki has not yet committed), the Roseanne revival is slated to make a return to ABC for eight episodes in early 2018.
