Lorde Disses Taylor Swift’s Squad, Says It’s ‘Frustrating’

The pop music industry is filled with cliques and popularity contests. Squads, too. You can ask Taylor Swift about the latter, but don’t bring it up to fellow artist and close friend Lorde. The Melodrama artist says she’s not fond of the term and she prefers not to be referred to as belonging to Swift’s squad, as though it’s some secret club. Lorde says she’s just friends with Taylor, plain and simple.

Melodrama Artist Lorde Is Her Own Woman

E! News reports that Lorde has taken to Twitter to debunk the idea of a privileged group of friends belonging to Taylor Swift’s squad, and doing so, has gone to further lengths to explain that she is not a member of any such squad. While the term used to describe Swift’s closest group of friends suggests a shadowy organization in line with such secret societies as the Illuminati or the Knights Templar, Lorde says there’s nothing quite so insidious going on.

In fact, Lorde says she has found the idea of belonging to Taylor’s squad as something frustrating, because she feels it cheapens the value she places on her friendship with Swift.

“I want to say one more time that Taylor has always been there for me in all my dark and light moments these past 5 years,” explained Lorde on Twitter. “All of them. I f—ed up an interview question. Now go sip a beverage and head out on a walk.”

Lorde Always Admired Taylor Swift

While Lorde isn’t fond of the implication that she’s fangirling Taylor Swift, she does admit she has always idolized the “Bad Blood” singer, according to Time. In a recent interview, Lorde was asked how she felt about befriending someone she had always admired as an artist and she responded by admitting that it can go to her head, if she were to allow it. Instead, she says it’s important to keep things in perspective.

Taking it one step further, Lorde explained that, while she is friends with Ms. Swift, that doesn’t necessarily mean she and Taylor share many of the same friendships. While Swift may have her own clique (or squad), Lorde doesn’t feel as though she’s been swept up into that Hollywood popularity contest.

She also revealed that, while Taylor Swift may be the most prominent influence on her music career, it’s her parents that have really inspired her and driven her to achieve success with such hits as “Royals” and “Green Light,” her most recent single.

“My parents are so inspiring in different ways. We’re a close family, and we’re very different. My mom’s a poet and very emotional; I’m a reader because of her,” Lorde says. “My dad’s an engineer — very methodical and very calm. I take a lot from both of them, I think.”
