2009 MLB season in review: Cincinnati Reds

The 2009 campaign of the Cincinnati Reds was yet another disappointment. Through the early part of the year the Reds looked like contenders, of course that was before losing 34 of 53 games though June and July. Much of the Reds struggles lie with Sophomore Jay Bruce, this Red mega prospect hit just .207 in 2009 and that simply is not good enough. Their star pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang were merely average. In the end their strong start was not inductive of what people expect from this team, and really what they expect of themselves.

Their final record was 78-84. That was good enough for fourth in the National League Central, and they finished 13 games behind division winner St. Louis. This team did spend two days in first place, yet never built a lead in the division race. At their worst they were 20.5 games back but used a late season rally to get within 13. For the season they were 3 games under .500 but through the summer that number was much worse at 20.

Their offense struggled scoring just 673 runs. As a team they hit .247 which was 15th among the 16 National League teams. They were able to hit 158 home runs, and were 8th among NL teams in that category. Only First baseman Joey Votto was able to finish the regular season batting greater than .300. Two of their pitchers finished with double digit victories, but as a staff their ERA was 4.18. They gave up only 188 home runs and recorded 1,069 strike out to 577 walks.

In all 1,747,920 fans traveled to the Great American Ball Park to see Reds home games. For their 81 home games they averaged 21,579 fans which was 27th among the 30 MLB teams. They wee only able to sell 51.3% of their 2009 ticket inventory.
