It was a harrowing scene as Bethanie Mattek-Sands was seen lying on the Wimbledon grass court writhing in pain. The American player went down hard on her right knee as she was eyeing a win against Sorana Cirstea in the second-round match at the All-England Tennis Club. She was in extreme pain, clutching her knee and screaming out for help.
According to a report by USA Today, Bethanie ran for the ball near the net on court 17. Somehow her knee buckled and she fell on the grass court clutching her right leg. She laid there for a minute before she started yelling out for someone to help her.
Sorana Cirstea walked over to the other side of the net to see what she could do for Mattek-Sands. She looked quite upset to see her opponent screaming for help. A few minutes later the medical team swarmed around her to assist. She laid on the court for about 25 minutes before she was carted off on a stretcher to be taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Bethanie's husband also rushed out on the court to be with her. He was seen bending down to comfort her before she was taken off the court. Everyone who witnessed the accident seemed to be in shock and very concerned for the 32-year-old tennis pro. This is not the only injury that Bethanie Mattek-Sands has suffered. She has had several injuries and has previously had surgeries on her knee.Bethanie's doubles partner, Lucie Safarova, was given the news of the injury and was seen in tears. She was obviously distressed when she heard what happened. The two women were looking to complete their fourth consecutive Grand Slam win at Wimbledon, but now Safarova is left worrying about the health of her doubles partner and friend.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands was a wild card this year at the Wimbledon Championship. This is a heartbreaking time for the American. Many tennis fans, along with her fellow tennis players, have taken to social media to wish her the best. She is said to be a very likable player on tour. She is also known for her wild, and sometimes colorful, tennis garb when she plays.
It is a hard thing to watch on video as Bethanie Mattek-Sands is seen screaming in pain. Quite a few of the men players have already retired due to injuries, but this one was far worse and extreme.
