Behind by 10 points at halftime, Western Carolina defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers 70-64. The footage is provided by TV62, Western Carolina’s closed-circuit television station.
Yahoo! Sports describes what happened when the 7 foot junior center, who averages two points and two rebounds a game, went to the foul line:
“With 11:07 left in the second half of Saturday afternoon’s game between the Mountaineers and Western Carolina, Okam attempted the second of two foul shots to try to extend his team’s lead to 10. Perhaps the ball slipped out of his hand, but it sailed high in the air and fell in the arms of a teammate about 10 feet short of the rim, leaving the Western Carolina TV analyst calling the game in such shock he aptly exclaimed, ‘I’m not sure what that was. Good lord.’ “
According to the Sporting News, “In his three-year career (including his freshman year at Rutgers in 2009-10), Okam is a 55 percent free throw shooter (12-for-22). “
ESPN rated Okam the country’s 15th-best college prospect when he graduated from Lake Highland High School in Orlando Florida. Appalachian State, located in Boone, North Carolina, is in the Southern Conference.
Larry Brown Sports quips that “Appalachian State center Brian Okam should be proud of himself for grabbing the attention of the Internet with his historically bad free throw attempt on Saturday … Well done, Brian, it’s not easy to miss a shot that badly.”
