The names Bella and Max have both actually spent seven consecutive years at the top of their respective lists. Many actually speculate that the popularity of the puppy name Bella to coincide with the release of multi-billion dollar book and film franchise, Twilight. The popular Twilight film series features Kristen Stewart as the lead actress, who plays the role of Bella.
The popular male dog names Bear and Rocky have also both been on the top 10 list for the past 13 years, with Rocky consistently placing in the top 5 during this time.
2012 also trended towards more human names, such as: Max, Buddy, Charlie, Jack, Toby, Daisy, Lucy, Molly, Lola, Sophie, Sadie, Chloe and Maggie. Such anthropomorphism is thought to signify our dog’s ever increasing importance in the family unit, with dog owners truly thinking of their dogs as human family members.
Numerous top female puppy names are also the names of the most au courant fragrances and fashion houses: Daisy and Lola are best selling Marc Jacobs brand fragrances, Chloe is a leading fashion house and similarly named fragrance, and Coco the name of fashion’s leading first lady, Coco Chanel, and the similarly named Chanel fragrance, Coco.
The name Lola actually climbed 3 spots on the list this year to number 5, with the name Coco appearing for the first time on the top 10.
