‘Conan Exiles’ Free Snowy Highlands Expansion, Xbox Game Preview Release Coming In August

Funcom woke E3 2017 watchers up Wednesday with some excellent news for Conan Exiles. The open-world survival game will a free expansion on August 16 along with an Xbox One release.

The Xbox One launch of Conan Exiles was originally scheduled to be released during the first half of the year, but Funcom felt some additional development time was needed after the successful PC launch. The delay was ultimately only a couple of months with today’s announcement.

Free Expansion

All the details on the free expansion have not been confirmed yet. Funcom does confirm it will bring a new biome to Conan Exiles that will expand the game world’s Exiled Lands by roughly 50 percent.

More information will be provided later, but the trailer does an excellent job of revealing the location along with some of the new creatures and enemies Exiles will face. The new biome is a mix of snow-blasted mountains, dense forests, and craggily tundra and grasslands. This should provide a large amount of diversity to the primarily desert-like areas currently in Conan Exiles.

Wolves, mammoths, elk, and rams can all be spotted in the trailer as well. The ominous appearance of orc-like creatures potentially gives players something more dangerous to fight than animals.

Funcom Head of Games Lawrence Poe also confirmed the expansion will come with new buildings, game features, and more.

Xbox One Release

Conan Exiles will release to the Xbox One as part of the Game Preview Program on the same day as the free expansion is released. This will give console players a much larger variety of environments and features to explore than is currently in the game.

Additionally, Funcom states the survival title will take advantage of the extra power Xbox One X after the new console releases on November 7. The developer says they plan to take “taking advantage of the system’s superior hardware power to bring the world of Conan the Barbarian to life in beautiful 4K resolution.”

No mention was made of price, but it is safe to assume the console launch will be approximately the same as the $30 Steam Early Access price.

The developers will appear on the Xbox E3 Daily Show livestream Wednesday between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. ET to talk about the game’s launch on the console as well as reveal some of the content that will arrive in the expansion.

Recent and Future Updates

Funcom has busily been updating Conan Exiles since launch with many features on its previously announced roadmap as well as those requested by the game community. This includes better protection against attacks by the giant avatars, defenses against siege weapons, and more.

Just last week, Creative Director Joel Bylos demonstrated the new climbing system that should be released to later this week. This will allow players to climb cliffs and player-built structures using a pair of craftable boots. Funcom is very against any form of flying in Conan Exiles so this is the substitute.

Other future updates include the addition of sorcery through the use of the game’s Corruption mechanic as well as the ability to tame some creatures.

Conan Exiles is scheduled to exit Early Access in the first quarter of 2018 with full releases to the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
