NYC Deli Worker Attacked With Fruit: ‘Brutal’ Avocado Assault Caused Broken Jaw And Facial Fractures

A deli worker in the Bronx received serious injuries when he was attacked by fruit. The victim had bananas and avocados thrown at him by two angry customers. New York City police are asking the public for help identifying the suspects. The entire incident was caught on tape and the faces of the attackers are very clear in the video recording.

It happened on May 29 at Stadium Gourmet Deli, which is in the Bronx, near Yankee Stadium. CBS New York reported that two Hispanic males became frustrated with the deli employee over a good order. He was new at working at the store and doesn’t speak English. FOX 5 News reported that the victim is 21 years old and was taken to Lincoln Hospital for treatment.

One of the suspects took an avocado and hit the victim in the face. It was done with such force that it caused the deli worker to stumble backward. Then, he was hit by several more avocados. In the video, the first suspect is screaming at the employee. Scrunching up his face and throwing the avocados like baseballs, he keeps attacking the deli worker. The second suspect waits a few moments before joining in.

The avocado assault stops for a few minutes, but only for the first suspect to continue yelling. Then, he picks up bunches of bananas and begins hurling them at the victim. In the background, the second suspect can be seen knocking over bags of chips.

Police say the victim was left with a broken jaw, several lacerations, and facial fractures. He was hospitalized, listed in serious but stable condition. It is unclear if the victim remains hospitalized or if he has been released.

The two men left Stadium Gourmet Deli in a dark-colored sedan. However, it is unclear which direction they were headed.

The first suspect is a Hispanic male between the ages of 25 and 30. His height is 5’7″ to 5’10” and weighs 170 to 190 pounds. On the day of the attack, he had on blue jeans and a black shirt and was wearing multi-colored sneakers.

The second suspect is a black male from 25 to 30 years old. Height is estimated at 5’7″ to 5’10” and weighs between 170 and 190 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, and a blue vest. He wore blue and white sneakers.

Authorities are asking that anyone who knows information about the suspects should contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or 888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish-speaking individuals. Those with tips can also go to the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers website or text CRIMES (274637) and then enter TIP577.
