Alison Brie On ‘GLOW’ And New Husband Dave Franco: ‘I Can Take On Anything!’

Alison Brie is well known to television fans for her stint on Community, while her film credits include the 2015 comedies Get Hard and Sleeping with Other People. Even with a fairly long list of credits following her 2006 Hannah Montana debut, it’s Alison’s latest stint as a wrestler on GLOW that showcases talents Brie never knew she possessed. In fact, the actress says she’s found similarities between her new life with Dave Franco and her portrayal as Ruth on GLOW, which she says has given her a big boost to her self-esteem.

For Alison Brie, Being Married To Dave Franco Is Like Wrestling On GLOW

During Saturday’s ATX Television Festival in Austin, 9 News reports that Alison Brie opened up about the new challenges in her life, which includes still being a newlywed. Ms. Brie and Dave Franco were married this March, following a long courtship, so, even as the actress was getting a taste of the wrestling world for her newest role on the small screen, she was also getting acclimated to married life.

When asked about the recent wedding and life following the honeymoon, Alison described life with Franco as “great,” though she followed that up with a clarification. Ms. Brie explained that she wasn’t saying every aspect of their lives was perfect, but that just being married was a euphoric experience for the both of them.

In GLOW, Alison Brie plays Ruth, one of many wrestlers in the reboot of the 80s show of the same name, which stands for Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling.

Alison expressed feeling empowered by the combined experiences of becoming a new wife to Dave and taking on wrestling in GLOW.

“I don’t know why those two things have kind of gone hand in hand for me, but they have,” says Alison Brie. “Wrestling and marriage, they’re both just like, ‘YAAAAHHHH I can take on anything!'”

Ms. Brie also shares that her new husband is GLOW‘s “biggest fan” and says she has been sending Franco videos of wrestling training sessions. Alison says there was nothing spectacular in the first few training classes, basic somersaults, but, as the sessions progressed, Brie proudly displayed moves that impressed her new husband.

GLOW Star Alison Brie Says Not Much Has Changed In Hollywood, Since The 80s

GLOW is set in the 80s, much like the original show from that time period, so, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ms. Brie addressed questions about what has changed since that bygone era. Talking from the perspective of an entertainer, Alison says nothing much has changed and she gives an example that even offended her GLOW casting director, Jennifer Euston.

“Early in my career, I auditioned for three lines on an episode of Entourage that I had to go on in a bikini!” said Brie. “Or like shorts and the tiniest shorts. And they were like, ‘Okay, can you take your top off now?'”

Entertainment Weekly notes that they have reached out for a comment from HBO in response to Alison Brie’s remarks.

Ms. Brie has been one of many actresses and filmmakers criticizing the lack of interesting roles for women and she again commented on that ongoing dilemma. The GLOW actress adds that even the smallest roles tend to pit hundreds of actresses against one another.

“I’ve gone through auditions for Marvel movies and auditioned a million times for roles with three lines and you are begging for them,” Alison Brie shared. “And I’d be glad to get them! It’s brutal, it just is.”

GLOW‘s Jennifer Euston has since tweeted about the comments made by Ms. Brie, adding that the story of Alison’s Entourage casting experience will forever remain with her. Euston said producers abuse their power in making such requests from actresses and suggested that the Entourage casting director should have stepped up to defend Ms. Brie.

GLOW begins streaming on Netflix on June 23.
