WWE Rumors: The Hardy Boyz Breaking Up? Jeff Hardy Getting Singles Push Or Matt Hardy Becoming ‘Broken’?

Matt and Jeff Hardy, famously known as The Hardy Boyz, are eight-time WWE Tag Team champions. They lost the Raw Tag Team titles to Cesaro and Sheamus on Extreme Rules last Sunday. The latest WWE rumors suggest that The Hardy Boyz are heading for a breakup that will lead to a potential singles push for both Matt and Jeff.

As recapped by WWE.com, The Hardy Boyz faced off against Cesaro and Sheamus in a Steel Cage Match at Extreme Rules. Matt and Jeff Hardy put on a great performance, but miscommunication and high-risk maneuvers led to their loss. Jeff escaped the steel cage first, but it left Matt on a 2-on-1 handicap that swung the momentum to Cesaro and Sheamus.

The Hardy Boyz was back in the mix again when Jeff launched himself atop the 15-foot steel structure onto their rivals. However, it incapacitated Jeff, and it allowed Cesaro and Sheamus to climb out of the steel cage to win the Raw Tag Team Championships. The high-risk move by Jeff Hardy proved costly since Cesaro and Sheamus won by a matter of seconds.

It was typical for The Hardy Boyz to lay it all on the line, but many were surprised that they lost the titles just two months after winning it at WrestleMania 33 in a Fatal 4-Way Ladder Match. Matt and Jeff Hardy received the biggest pop that night, and it showed that nostalgia is still a big thing in the WWE. However, the company might be heading in a different direction for both Hardy brothers based on the latest rumors.

According to Cageside Seats, the tag title change and the finish of the Steel Cage Match could lead to the breakup of The Hardy Boyz. The story is going to be Matt Hardy becoming unhappy with Jeff’s high-risk moves. It is expected that Cesaro and Sheamus are going to defend the Raw Tag Team titles against The Hardy Boyz in a rematch at Great Balls of Fire next month.

The WWE brought back The Hardy Boyz not just to provide nostalgia as a tag team but as a singles stars for the company. While they were away from the WWE, Matt and Jeff Hardy developed new characters, and they were under the whole “Broken” gimmick. It was one of the most entertaining acts in all of wrestling, and the WWE noticed how over “Broken” Matt Hardy and “Broken” Brother Nero were as fans had chanted “Delete” and “Obsolete” at several shows.

The “Broken” gimmick has great potential, but the looming breakup of Matt and Jeff Hardy will lead to a heel turn. Matt is better suited off as the heel “Broken” character while Jeff remains as himself since he’s always had charisma. It was even rumored last month that the WWE was even planning a huge singles push for Jeff Hardy.

Sportskeeda reported that the WWE has always looked at Jeff as the bigger star between the Hardy brothers. Jeff was big for the company from 2008 to 2009 during his main event push. On the other hand, “Broken” Matt Hardy will also be big for the WWE, but the legal issue involving Anthem and Impact Wrestling is something that needs to be settled first.

In an appearance on Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho podcast (h/t Wrestling Inc), Jeff Hardy pointed out that Impact Wrestling’s threat is preventing them from using the “Broken” characters in the WWE. However, Jeff also insisted that the WWE is not currently interested in using the gimmick on television the moment.

“No (there was no talk of using the Broken gimmick in WWE), because we did the Ring Of Honor pay-per-view. That’s when we got the whole cease and desist letter. They said if we use it, ‘We’re going to sue you’ and sue Ring Of Honor.”

It should be noted that these are just rumors at the moment, and nothing has been confirmed. The WWE tends to change their plans on a daily basis, and they could even postpone The Hardy Boyz split later this year. Nevertheless, the fans just need to watch Monday Night Raw every week to see the progress of Matt and Jeff Hardy’s story.
