‘Sister Wives’ Star Kody Brown Opens Up About How Polygamy Will Affect His First Grandchild

Sister Wives patriarch Kody Brown just welcomed his first grandchild, a bouncing baby boy named Axel James. Baby Axel was born on May 20 to Maddie Brown Brush, Kody’s daughter with second wife Janelle. The first-time grandfather has just recently updated his family’s followers on how the baby is doing and answered everyone’s question: How will polygamy influence baby Axel’s early years?

Maddie Gave Birth At Home

In a video posted by TLC, Kody and Janelle excitedly shared the news that they were now grandparents. Kody revealed that his daughter Maddie decided to have a home birth and delivered Axel at their house.

“Having Maddie give birth in our home was pretty intense.”

Maddie was in labor for a total of 72 hours, which Kody said was a “serious business.” For him, having the baby delivered via home birth was a great experience for the whole family.

“It was interesting because we were all there together. Everybody was cheering her on. I think, honestly, that she was kinda drawing strength from all of us being there.”

Kody and Janelle described their first grandchild as “the perfect baby.” They are obviously enjoying playing grandpa and grandma right now and joked that the best part was not being “stuck” with the challenges of parenthood.

Turning into a more serious note, the two offered tips for their 21-year-old daughter. Kody definitely is no stranger at parenting. The Sister Wives star has 18 children in total with his four wives. For him, being a parent is hard and requires intuition, but it’s important to remember that nature will take care of everything, eventually.

“Let him cry sometimes. And then again, you need to solve the problem. It’s tough being a parent.”

Baby Axel Will Have Four Grandmas

In a past episode of Sister Wives, Maddie and her husband, Caleb Brush, have said that their marriage will not be a polygamous one. Maddie is not following her parents’ footsteps and decided to be in a monogamous relationship. Unlike her, baby Axel will only know one mother. He will, however, have more than one grandma.

Janelle confirmed this in the video and insisted that the baby has four grandmothers. The Sister Wives family is known for their unconventional family set-up. Kody Brown is a polygamist and has four wives: Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn. All four families have separate nearby houses, but they consider themselves as just one unit.

“We’ve had a lot of discussion about what each of us is going to be called, ‘coz there’s more than one of grandma in our situation. I decided I’m going to wait for him to give me a name.”

Sister Wives: Where Are They Now?

Currently, Kody Brown and his large family keep their fans updated through social media. Kody recently slammed rumors of separation by posting an old family photo on Mother’s Day. Janelle also tweeted that they spent the occasion together as one big happy family.

Meanwhile, first wife Meri and Christine posted a photo of them together attending the college graduation of her daughter Mariah. Janelle’s eldest son, Logan, also graduated the same day in a different state, and Kody was with her to celebrate.

As for Robyn, Kody’s fourth and only legal wife, they recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary last May 22. Meri, who used to be Kody’s legal wife, proved that there’s no room for jealousy in a polygamous household. She even publicly greeted the two on Twitter.

TLC has not yet announced whether Sister Wives will be returning for another season. It aired its final season last year. However, the network is either renewing or making spin-offs of its past hit shows such as 90 Day Fiance and Return to Amish.
