On the first Friday of every June, everyone in the United States can come together, joined in harmony on National Donut Day, bonding over their love of donuts. After all, when it comes to donuts, everyone has their own favorite variety. Whether it’s the humble and plain glazed, the upscale cruller, the new flashy croissant donut, or any one of a thousand different varieties, love of these tasty deep fried dough loops unites us all.
National Donut Day has a grand 79-year tradition that dates back to the Great Depression in 1938 when the Salvation Army in Chicago used donuts as a fundraiser to help the hungry and poor. It was also a way to honor the women in World War I who served the tasty cake treats to soldiers. Coincidentally, this is the 100th anniversary of the first Donut Lassies, who started in 1917.
