‘Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2’ Sells $1 Billion In Just 15 Days

The popular Call of Duty franchise continues to generate a substantial amount of cash for Treyarch and the folks at Activision.

Black Ops 2 has reportedly earned $1 billion in just 15 days, according to Forbes. The game reached this staggering total just one day ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Those who keep screaming that the franchise is on its last legs may want to take another look at Activision’s bank account.

Needless to say, the publisher is quite happy with the success Black Ops 2 has experienced over the past few weeks. In fact, CEO Bobby Kotick even issued the following statement on the matter:

“The release of ‘Call of Duty’ has been one of the most significant entertainment events of each of the last six years.

Since ‘Call of Duty’ was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined. Life-to-date sales for the ‘Call of Duty’ franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars,’ the two most successful movie franchises of all time.”

According to Cinema Blend, Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2 have outperformed director James Cameron’s box office sensation Avatar. The acclaimed motion picture managed to generate $1 billion in 17 days. Given that video games are a little pricier than movie tickets, Cameron’s feat is still a bit more impressive.

Joystiq explains that financial analyst Arvind Bhatia of Sterne Agee expressed concern that Black Ops 2 wasn’t performing as expected, prompting him to classify Activision-Blizzard’s release as a “cause for concern.” As a result, the company’s stock was downgraded from “buy” to “neutral.”

With Christmas right around the proverbial corner, chances are Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will continue to make an impressive amount of money before all is said and done.
