Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy on the hit television show, The Big Bang Theory, released her book this month, Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular. It’s a forthright book that addresses issues that girls face as they grow up with a focus on the physical and emotional challenges that girls encounter today.
Bialik even included fun graphics that are similar to a comic book to add an interesting touch to the book. It’s the kind of book that many women wish they had their hands on when they were pre-teens and teenagers.
As The Gulf Press pointed out, Mayim is not just an actress writing a book to promote her celebrity career. Bialik has a Ph.D in Neuroscience, just like the character she plays on The Big Bang Theory. Mayim Bialik is passionate about issues that face girls today and she frequently blogs about these topics on Grok Nation. In fact, this book originated as a blog post that she wrote after she did a scene on The Big Bang Theory with Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon.
In the scene on The Big Bang Theory that inspired the original blog post Amy and Sheldon, who are as awkward of a couple as you’ve ever seen on TV, get intimate for the first time. Mayim Bialik says that this made her think about “how complicated intimacy can be on TV and in real life,” and what being a late bloomer is like. Mayim said this scene really made her think and it became the original blog post.
After the blog post went live on Bialik’s blog, Philomel Books, a publishing company saw it and approached her about writing a book. The book has since been reviewed by other professionals including an obstetrician, a school counselor, and a neuropsychologist.
The Associated Press spoke to Mayim Bialik about her book, Girling Up: How To Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular and asked what kind of research she had to do when she was writing the book. Mayim said that it wasn’t necessary for her to do a lot of research because the book was very relevant to her own life. The fact that she is a trained scientist helped, too.
When it came to getting information like what is in her book, Mayim said that when she was a teenager she really didn’t get that information because her parents were religious immigrants. The things Bialik discusses in her book just weren’t spoken of by her family. As a late bloomer, Mayim admits that it “took me a long time to understand and come to terms with a lot of aspects of being female.”
The book has a wide range of topic because Mayim Bialik felt it was important for girls to know that it is ok to be different and to be interested in different things. As a girl who is “a boyish female,” Mayim understands how difficult it can be to come to terms with being whoever you are.
Mayim Bialik said that one of the first things girls need to understand is how their brains and their bodies work. That’s why she put the first focus of the book on these points. While the book is not “sparkly and shiny” like other books that are directed at teenage girls, Mayim said that it helps girls figure out that they are in charge of their own bodies.
Mayim Bialik’s book, Girling Up: How To Be Strong, Smart, And Spectacular was released on May 9, 2017. It is available at all major retailers.
Meanwhile, you will be able to see Mayim Bialik as Amy on The Big Bang Theory for at least two more years. She just signed a new contract so fans can expect more great scenes with Amy and Sheldon in the future.
