10 Highly-Rated Netflix Movies To Watch This Holiday Weekend: ‘War Machine,’ ‘Don’t Think Twice,’ And More

From dramas and horror flicks, to romantic-comedies, there are several new movies on Netflix to fill your long weekend with hours of entertainment. Some of the best movies on Netflix are not just the Hollywood blockbusters that they host; their most recent original picture, the satirical War Machine, is starting to turn heads as well. So whether you’re in the mood for a thought-provoking story, a scary tale, or a laugh-out-loud comedy, Netflix has the answer for your streaming needs this Memorial Day weekend.

Mindhorn

Richard Thorncroft (Julian Barratt) is a washed-up actor who is best known for portraying Detective Mindhorn in the ’80s series, Mindhorn. Thorncroft must play the famed character one more time when a serial killer says he will only communicate to Detective Mindhorn (whom he thinks is a real-life detective).

This hilarious comedy on Netflix received rave reviews. Critics and audiences praised Barratt’s performance and viewers can look forward to some entertaining cameos including Steve Coogan and Simon Callow.

Bridget Jones’s Baby

Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is back, and her focus on her career and single life is thrown askew when she finds out she’s pregnant. The problem is that she is only 50 percent sure on who the father is.

Where the first movie received great acclaim, the sequel was widely-panned from critics. But this third addition to the trilogy was well received; many fans and critics liked it even more than the first. Bridget Jones’s Baby was considered one of the best romantic-comedy movies from 2016, and it’s likely to be a favorite among Netflix subscribers.

The Place Beyond the Pines

A former motorcycle stunt rider (Ryan Gosling) is chased by a determined cop (Bradley Cooper) after turning to a life of crime to support his wife (Eva Mendes) and child.

The Place Beyond the Pines tells the story of a father and husband willing to do anything for his family, albeit in a destructive way, and of a police officer trying to preserve law and order. This picture is one of the most powerful, thought-provoking, and heartbreaking movies on Netflix.

Southpaw

After losing his wife in an accident and his kid to child protection services, boxer Billy “The Great” Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) turns to his trainer (Forest Whitaker) to get his life back on track.

If you’re still in the mood for a drama after watching The Place Beyond the Pines, but you want something a bit more inspirational, then this Netflix gem is the movie for you. Southpaw tells the story of a man who was on top of the world and then fell to the deepest of the abyss, and he must find the courage within himself to rise-up once again.

Christine

This tells the true story of ’70s TV reporter Christine Chubbuck, who struggled with professional vexations and depression while trying to progress her career. Critics and audiences alike praised the performance of Rebecca Hall as Christine, and many consider it one of her best movies. Co-starring Michael C. Hall and Tracy Letts, Christine is as thought-provoking as it is dramatic.

Don’t Think Twice

Written, directed, and co-starring Mike Birbiglia (Sleepwalk With Me), Don’t Think Twice was one of the most popular comedies from 2016. It has a stunning score of 99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and the site provides the premise for one of the best movies on Netflix.

“When a member of a popular New York City improv troupe gets cast on a hit TV show, the rest of the group — all best friends — start to realize that not everyone is going to make it after all. From the director of Sleepwalk With Me and the creator of This American Life comes Don’t Think Twice, a critically acclaimed comedy packed with comic stars Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Mike Birbiglia, Kate Micucci, Chris Gethard and Tami Sagher that presents a hilarious and honest look at the lives of professional funny people.”

If you enjoy Mike Birbiglia’s humor or movies, or any of the co-stars from this feature, then you will most likely thoroughly enjoy Don’t Think Twice. And if you’re in the mood for more of Birbiglia, three of his stand-up specials are currently streaming on Netflix.

The Daughter

This 2017 drama on Netflix tells the story of a man (Paul Schneider) who returns home after being gone for 15 years. But his return may cause his family more pain and destruction than his hiatus did.

Co-starring Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Miranda Otto, and Ewen Leslie, The Daughter has been described as a thoughtful look at the bonds of community, friendship, and family.

War Machine

Based on the book, The Operator, by the late Michael Hastings, this satirical comedy centers on the U.S. military’s involvement in Afghanistan. Released on May 26, 2017, War Machine is Netflix’s most recent original film, and it features an ensemble cast, including Brad Pitt, Ben Kingsley, Tilda Swinton, Topher Grace, and Anthony Michael Hall.

Thus far, the film has received mixed reviews from critics with most of them being positive. If you enjoy satirical movies, then you will most likely have a good time watching this Netflix original film. Leonard Maltin describes why War Machine is one of the best Netflix movies for intrigue and satire.

War Machine has a lot going for it, including a stellar performance by Brad Pitt and an insider’s view of military life in the middle East that rings all too true (at least to an armchair observer like me). In adapting the late Michael Hastings’ whistle-blowing book…writer-director David Michôd has drawn on his own experience as a journalist to good effect.”

Viral

As a deadly virus quickly spreads, two sisters must keep one another safe while seeking refuge in their home.

Though it has gained popularity since landing on Netflix, this film was considered one of the most underrated horror movies of 2016. With solid performances, great reviews, and a few scares, Viral has plenty to offer genre fans.

Dig Two Graves

After her brother mysteriously disappears, 14-year-old Jacqueline (who goes by Jake) goes on a journey through a nightmarish town. She is approached by three people who say they can bring back her brother if she is willing to choose a life of another.

Dig Two Graves is considered one of the most overlooked horror flicks of 2017. This eerie coming-of-age tale on Netflix has been called both scary and heartwarming.
