Sasheer Zamata Leaves ‘Saturday Night Live,’ But Hardly No One Knew It

Saturday Night Live said goodbye to a few of the show’s players on Saturday evening, including Sasheer Zamata, seen in the above photo. However, according to Vanity Fair, it wasn’t well known by Saturday Night Live viewers that Sasheer would be one of those actors departing the show. Whereas the departures of Saturday Night Live cast members Bobby Moynihan and Vanessa Bayer were more well known throughout the industry, the fact that Sasheer celebrated her last night on Saturday Night Live wasn’t mentioned, and Zamata didn’t say goodbye on camera.

The finale of Saturday Night Live featured Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a host, and with Johnson making his humorous announcement that he would be running for president, Zamata kept a low profile during the episode. Moynihan and Bayer were able to perform aplenty during the Saturday Night Live episode, with the “Drunk Uncle” character making an appearance during the popular “Weekend Update” segment. Vanessa as a weather woman who was so nervous that she was hard to understand, Dawn Lazarus, also made an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Sasheer’s presence seemed lost on the Saturday Night Live stage, which was dominated by stars like Katy Perry during her two performances, and Scarlett Johansson, who popped up again as Ivanka Trump in the cold open sketch. Alec Baldwin and Tom Hanks also made surprise appearances.

Zamata may have gotten attention after the Saturday Night Live episode ended, reports the publication, and could be seen getting carried off the stage by Dwayne Johnson, as seen in the above photo. Zamata did get screen time on her final Saturday Night Live episode during a sketch with Johnson starring as a man who created a horrific robot that would abuse children.

Despite many viewers not knowing it would be Zamata’s last Saturday Night Live episode, she still gained more attention than when Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah were booted from the show in the summer of 2016. With Sasheer leaving the show in such an unexpected manner, Saturday Night Live isn’t commenting further on the situation at this time.

Zamata joined Saturday Night Live amid controversy about the dearth of African-American women on the cast. Sasheer described how very public her audition process was during that time, and how many messages wishing her good luck she received as a result. However, now that Zamata has departed from Saturday Night Live, comments like the following are flowing into social media about her leaving the show.
