Liam Payne, Cheryl Almost Split: ‘Strip That Down’ Singer Pleaded Girlfriend Not To End Things

Liam Payne recently welcomed his baby with girlfriend Cheryl and fans couldn’t help but think that they are just an adorable couple. However, things weren’t always smooth in their relationship and the former One Direction got candid about that one time he and Cheryl almost broke up.

Liam was chatting with Dan Wootton of The Sun Thursday on a podcast and revealed that his relationship with the former Girls Aloud member almost came to an end. Payne also revealed that his relationship with Cheryl is an inspiration for his songs, one of which was about their almost break-up. The 23-year-old also shared how he pleaded for her not to end things between them.

“There is one song about a phone call that happened between me and her and she was about to say go – this was ages ago, and it’s basically me trying to cling on saying no, it’s going to work out, don’t worry about it give it time.”

Payne is no way letting go of Cheryl that easy because, after all, she was his dream girl. During the first time he opened up about his relationship with the former X-Factor judge to U.K.’s Rollercoaster magazine, Liam gushed about the 33-year-old singer, describing her as “ace.”

“This is the thing: In a non-cliché way, it’s weird waking up every day and literally living out your dream…Obviously I have the most beautiful girlfriend in the world, and she’s absolutely amazing. She’s been my dream girl since I was younger. She’s so ace.”

It must have been the wink that Payne gave Cheryl during his audition that got her. The same wink was the reason why Liam was made fun of by his friends during high school. But it turns out that the wink’s magic worked and the “Strip That Down” singer couldn’t agree more.

“The wink is powerful, it has powers beyond its own means. I have to be careful — it’s a licensed weapon in the UK,” Liam said.

Cheryl and Liam’s relationship got some eyebrows raising because of their 10-year gap. They first met on the X-Factor audition, when Liam was just a teenager. Through it all, the couple showed everyone that their relationship can work. They’re more in love with and more serious about each other. Despite that, there are still no plans of getting married yet.

In the same sit-down with Wootton, Liam Payne said that marriage is not in the cards for him, at least not at the moment. Payne, however, sparked rumors that he and Cheryl have secretly tied the knot. He dropped the word “wife” during a radio interview with SiriusXM on the Morning Mash Up segment while talking about how much he loves American burger chain In-N-Out Burger.

“I left my wife and child at home and I was straight out to In-N-Out burger. I’m just kidding.”

But before fans could react to the rumors, a source has already confirmed to E! News that there was no secret marriage between Cheryl and Liam. Calling someone your wife, apparently, is a U.K. slang used to refer to someone’s better half. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that Liam is enjoying his life with his significant other, especially now that baby Bear Payne is around.

Payne is currently having a promo tour in the U.S. for his debut solo “Strip That Down.” The doting dad admits that he is missing his son “terribly” while he’s busy promoting his career. Liam said that it’s difficult being far from his newborn kid but he knows that his music is something that he needs and loves to do.
