Nick Carter And Former Spice Girl Team Up On ABC’s ‘Boy Band’

ABC has announced the judges for its brand new singing competition show, Boy Band, that goes on a quest to give birth to the new One Direction.

As ABC is working hard on its upcoming American Idol reboot – recently announcing Katy Perry would serve as a judge in 2018 – the network has selected three judges (known as “architects”) for Boy Band: Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, and Oscar-nominated Rita Ora.

ABC is bringing back some 90s favorites to craft boy bands on America’s TV all summer long. The 10-episode first season will premiere on June 22, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Boy Band – architected by Nick Carter, Bunton, and Ora – will go on a mission to create the first ever successful boy band from a reality TV show since One Direction. Ever since 1D was formed on U.K.’s X Factor back in 2010, no hit boy band has emerged from a reality TV show, though plenty have tried.

Boy Band and its judges Nick Carter, Bunton, and Ora will be pitting contestants against one another in a fierce battle to join 2017’s new hit boy band.

Only 18 contestants will be selected from thousands of aspiring male singers. Those 18 lucky ones will be separated into three bands – not necessarily harmoniously fitting there – and the judges Nick Carter, Bunton, and Ora will have to find the perfect combination.

It’s basically nothing American TV viewers have never seen before – contestants will be eliminated from Boy Band one by one on a weekly basis.

When the perfect boy band is formed, its members will sign a recording contract at Hollywood Records and go on their journey to become the next music-group sensation.

Architects Nick Carter, Bunton, and Ora will be raising their eyebrows or dancing in their seats in excitement as each band will be performing songs together. The architects will then be selecting two contestants that impressed them the least to perform solo, according to TV Guide.

Viewers at home, meanwhile, will be clinging to their phones and voting for their favorite contestants out of the two to survive in Boy Band through the next week, giving viewers the opportunity – just like Nick Carter, Bunton, and Ora – to be architects of the new hit boy band.

In the finale, which will air on ABC toward the end of summer 2017, America’s favorite five contestants will become part of the perfect boy band that will perform its first new single as a band for the first time on national TV, and most likely break into Billboard’s Top 10.

Each episode of Boy Band will feature a different theme, while Nick Carter, Bunton, and Ora will be shuffling contestants to find the best combination of a boy band.

Although unlike Rita Ora, Nick Carter, and Bunton have no previous experience judging and coaching in reality TV shows, the two have been part of some of the most successful musical acts of all time, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls, respectively.

Not only will Ora, Nick Carter, and Bunton be eliminating contestants in their duties of architects, but also serve as mentors. Ora, who was nominated for best original song at Oscars 2015, has recently showed off her hosting skills on VH1’s America’s Next Top Model reboot.

While Ora announced she won’t host the show’s next season – with creator Tyra Banks filling her shoes – the “Body on Me” singer has previously served as a coach on BBC’s The Voice and ITV’s The X Factor.

With American Idol and Boy Band, ABC is determined to compete against NBC’s The Voice in the battle for the best show in the singing competition genre.

ABC has never hosted American Idol before, as it won the rights to the hit singing competition show only earlier this month. American Idol had aired on Fox for 15 seasons and ended last year. Fox reportedly wanted to give fans time to breathe until 2020, the year it was planning to bring back the hit reality TV show.
