‘Outlander’: Is Author Diana Gabaldon Ready To Kill Off Jamie And Claire?

Warning: This article may contain spoilers for the Outlander book series and Outlander Season 3.

All good things must come to an end, and best-selling author Diana Gabaldon is hinting that the end may be nigh for her Outlander characters, Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall Fraser.

In an interview with the Scottish Sun, Gabaldon — who is currently writing the ninth book in her Outlander series — said that it might soon be time to retire the wildly popular time-traveling couple.

“I think there are 10 books in the main series then a prequel about Jamie’s parents,” she said.

“But it is Jamie and Claire’s lives, so everyone’s got to die sooner or later — myself included.”

While the thought of potentially losing the book versions of Jamie and Claire is sad, fans can take solace in the knowledge that the TV versions of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) will return in Outlander Season 3 this fall, and, as Inquisitr previously reported, the show’s producers have already begun work on Outlander Season 4, casting two adorable puppies to play Rollo the dog.

Rollo is a wolf hybrid that becomes an integral part of the Fraser clan in Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in Gabaldon’s Outlander series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the two Northern Inuit puppies cast as Rollo have already started training, so they can be ready for their extensive roles in Season 4, which will be based on Drums.

Gabaldon told EW that the puppies are perfect to play Rollo.

“They look cute, but tough. They should be just right to play Rollo when the time comes. They’d need to growl and look menacing on command, I think, and carry back prey of one kind or another to their master. I assume they wouldn’t let them catch things on camera … especially fish, of course.”

Outlander has not yet been renewed for Season 5 and beyond, but Gabaldon told the Scottish Sun she thinks it likely will be.

“I am hopeful we will get a fifth and maybe a sixth series, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

If the series does continue after Season 4, the author thinks it will continue filming in Scotland even though future storylines will take place in the American Colonies.

“I don’t know what will happen, but they might continue to use Cumbernauld, [Scotland], for North Carolina because inside sets could be anywhere and there are enough places in Scotland that look like North Carolina.”

Of course, there is a lot of the Outlander story left to tell before Jamie and Claire reach America. Right now, the show’s cast and crew are still hard at work filming Outlander Season 3 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Gabaldon said that filming all the late-Season 3 ship adventures has a bit hard on Outlander heartthrob Sam Heughan.

“They have these incredible full-sized ships with hydraulics on set which make them pitch and yaw like real ones,” she explained. “Sam had to throw up for one scene as it’s no spoiler to say that Jamie Fraser gets seasick. He was standing there with a page of script in his hand looking more than disheveled, and he said to me he thought he really was going to be sick.

“Sam said, ‘They’ve given me egg whites tinted green with the most disgusting vanilla essence in it. And I have to hold it in my mouth until it’s time to throw up.’

“Of course, they shot the scene over and over again and at about the sixth time, Sam looked at the glass of egg whites before saying, ‘F**k my life.’ So acting is not all glamorous.”

Will you be upset if Diana Gabaldon kills off Jamie and Claire when she finishes the 10th novel of the Outlander series?

Outlander Season 3 returns to Starz in September.
