‘Django Unchained:’ Tarantino Tried To Keep The Film Under Three Hours

Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino said during a recent interview that he doesn’t want a three hour version of the upcoming western.

According to Indiewire, Tarantino joined Ben Affleck, Ang Lee, David O. Russell, Tom Hooper, and Gus Van Sant at a director’s roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter. At one point during the conversation, the Django Unchained filmmaker turned his attention to rumors that he was under pressure to shorten his latest feature.

After shooting down rumors that Harvey Weinstein wanted him to trim the fat from the flick, Tarantino said he didn’t want a three hour version of the film either.

“When you’re cutting it down, at that moment in time, before you watch it with an audience, you know it’s too long, but you can’t imagine taking anything out,” he explained.

However, watching Django Unchained with an audience showed the talented director where the movie still needed a little work in the editing room.

“So then you watch it with an audience, and then all of a sudden — ‘Oh, wow, that is kind of boring now!’ or ‘No, this is not as suspenseful by the time we got to it as it needs to be.’ But you can only go so far in the Avid room on your own. At some point, you have to watch it with an audience. And then you watch the movie and 15 minutes are gone by noon the next day!” he explained.

Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western recently received its final trailer, a satisfying clip which suggests the director is still at the top of his game.

Django Unchained, which stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Don Johnson, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and the former Django Franco Nero. The film opens across the US on December 25. Are you looking forward to Quentin Tarantino’s latest cinematic effort?
