If you’re wondering what new games are coming out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this month, the May lineup of video game releases has something for everyone on every platform. Even VR systems and the newly-released Nintendo Switch get shown some love this month, and handheld gamers on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita also have some choice titles to look forward to. Whether you’re into open-world solo adventures or intense multiplayer brawlers, check out some of the new games on many gamers’ “must play” lists this month.

Prey

Release Date: May 5
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios kick off the month with a massive sci-fi survival game that is a fresh take on the original 2006 release from Human Head Studios and 2K Games. The narrative follows scientist Morgan Yu as he struggles to survive on a space station infested with hostile alien creatures. Reviews have been mostly positive, with critics citing intriguing plot twists, as well as an interesting set of abilities for the player to acquire and master.

Injustice 2

Release Date: May 16
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Based on pre-order numbers alone, Injustice 2 is expected to be the top-seller of May, 2017. The NetherRealm Studios-developed brawler that pits DC Comics’ finest against each other à la Mortal Kombat has over 95,200 pre-orders on PlayStation 4 and about 75,000 copies have been pre-ordered on Xbox One as of the week ending April 1, according to VG Chartz.

Farpoint

Release Date: May 16
Platform: PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR owners get another exclusive game that they can enjoy alone or with a friend in Farpoint. The VR experience puts players on an uncharted planet, where they are challenged to traverse the rough terrain and survive alien encounters after a crash landing. The game can be purchased on its own or bundled with the new PS VR Aim Controller accessory.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Release Date: May 19
Platform: Nintendo 3DS

With Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have completely remade 1992’s Fire Emblem Gaiden, the second game in the long-running Fire Emblem series that fans in North America have not yet seen released in the region. The storyline still follows the premise of the original; two childhood friends wrangle with a sense of duty and the feelings in their hearts as they find themselves on opposing sides of a war.

In addition to the main game, there are five additional DLC packs that can be purchased individually or as part of a Season Pass. Amiibo figures featuring the game’s protagonists are also set to release in a special dual pack.

RiME

Release Date: May 26
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One

In this single-player puzzle adventure game, players take on the role of a boy shipwrecked on an island. As players complete challenges and uncover the mysteries hidden in the island’s ruins, they help the young boy find himself, as well as a way home. The gameplay is likely to appeal to Nintendo Switch owners who’ve enjoyed the shrine puzzles in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the developer has confirmed RiME will be released on the platform at a later date.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Release Date: May 30
Platform: HTC Vive, Oculus VR, PlayStation VR

After a brief delay to make some key changes, like adding the Enterprise to the game, Star Trek: Bridge Crew boldly goes where no gamer has gone before. This Star Trek simulator can be enjoyed solo or with friends; either way, it puts players aboard a Federation vessel in the role of a bridge crew member. Whether the player chooses to take on the responsibilities of Captain or run the Tactical or Engineering positions, the experience is poised to give many a Trekkie the virtual reality experience of their dreams.
