Kevin Costner’s ‘Waterworld’ To Get A Remake?

Kevin Costner’s infamous box-office failure Waterworld is set to be remade by the Syfy cable television network, as either a TV series or a feature film.

Syfy has been looking to enter the film market for several years, and since 2004’s merger with Universal Entertainment the channel has had access to Universal Pictures huge collection of property.

The network’s president, Dave Howe, recently stated, “Having a theatrical film label is not only a natural fit for Syfy. It’s also a gap in the marketplace.”

Costner’sWaterworld would be a surprising choice for the company. It was grossly over-budgeted at $235million, which at the time made it the most expensive movie ever produced, an honor which was later stolen by Titanic, and was also a huge box office failure. It did manage to turn a profit though through home video sales.

However, Howe has revealed that every time the Syfy channel airs the movie it attracts around 400,000 viewers, a surprising large amount for such a notorious movie failure.

Howe also stated that a movie sequel to Waterworld has ‘never really [been] on the cards,’ however a television series inspired by the 1995 film has been ‘talked about endlessly.’ It would obviously need to have a much smaller budget than the original though.

Syfy films has confirmed that it is ‘actively developing scripts’ for the project. They can also take confidence from the success of the sci-fi TV spin-off series ‘Stargate’, which developed a cult status after a long stint on air. What do you think about a Waterworld sequel? Would you like to see Costner return to the water?
