Nicki Minaj Brands Steven Tyler A ‘Racist’ Over ‘Idol’ Criticism

Former American Idol judge Steven Tyler doesn’t think much of the feud between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, and for this, the latter has branded him a racist.

Tyler spoke about the much-publicized feud between the newly-minted judges in an interview with MTV, saying:

“They should have something going on, which is called ‘camaraderie.’ They should have something going on so thick and beautiful that they can lay it over the new talent that’s trying to birth itself. It needs to be birthed, not judged by ‘entertainment’ factors, it needs to be judged by people that [are] honest, true, that have the ‘it’ factor. Not the ‘it’ factor because they can fight. The f— is that all about?”

He added:

“You just have to give your opinion. It wasn’t hard for me, but I would imagine it’s hard for some people, and they need a manager to say ‘Shut the f— up, and just give them your opinion. These kids, they just got out of a car from the Midwest somewhere and they’re in New York City, they’re scared to death; you’re not going to get the best [out of them]. … If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield!”

Sure, Tyler’s comments were direct, but his point is that Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj are falling into the hands of American Idol producers by feeding their feud, tearing the focus away from young talent and fixing it squarely on hot-headed divas, making it their show, not the contestants’ show.

But it doesn’t matter, because Nicki Minaj didn’t really even hear what Tyler was saying before the “R-word” flashed in her head. Branding someone a “racist” when they disagree with you is a disturbing cultural trend better left to politicians and internet commenters, but Minaj threw Tyler under the bus for his perspective, suggesting that his “Bob Dylan” quip was pure racism.

Of course, Minaj’s followers think this is hilarious.

These are our “idols.”
