Instagram Breaks Records On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a great time to reunite with family, eat pounds and pounds of turkey, and, apparently, snap a few photos with Instgram.

Instagram reported today that Thanksgiving 2012 was its busiest day ever in the United States. Users posted more than 10 million Thanksgiving related photos during the holiday. For several hours, Instagram users were posting more than 200 photos per second. The photo sharing peaked around 12:40 pm PST when photos were shared at a rate of 226 per second.

The company said on its website:

“We’re thrilled to see people use Instagram to share their holidays. Whether celebrating with friends and family or sharing photos with them halfway across the globe, we’re excited to see the intimacy and immediacy of the Instagram experience bring us all closer together over this holiday season.”

Thanksgiving was such a busy day for Instagram that the company “broke all Instagram records as we saw the number of shared photos more than double from the day before, making it our busiest day so far.”

According to USA Today, Instagram recently surpassed the 5 billion photo mark and now has more than 100 million users. The company was recently purchased by Facebook, which currently averages about 300 million photos per day, and will most likely see more records fall in the coming months.
