‘Dredd’ Headed To DVD, Blu-Ray This January

Dredd, the action film based on the long-running UK comic book series, is headed to DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray this January, according to Cinema Blend.

Although director Pete Travis’ adaptation of Judge Dredd was much better than the 1995 feature starring Sylvester Stallone, the film didn’t make much of an impact at the North American box office. The film only earned $13 million during its theatrical run.

Those who opted to skip this particular endeavor will have an opportunity to see what they missed on January 8, 2013. As stated, the film will be available in a number of formats.

Based on characters created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s, Pete Travis’ Dredd follows the adventures of the titular character as he attempts to rid the streets of evil. Karl Urban, who stars as Judge Dredd, is joined by Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).

Rotten Tomatoes lists the official synopsis as follows:

“The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One — a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge — a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.”

While the film failed to resonate with audiences, Dredd received mostly positive ratings from a number of top critics. Claudia Puig of USA Today seemed pleasantly surprised by the movie.

“While not for the squeamish, ‘Dredd’ is an effectively gritty B movie accentuated by stylish visuals and irreverent humor,” she wrote.
