Janeane Garofalo Drops Bombshell: ‘I Was Married For 20 Years Without Knowing It’

Leave it to comedian Janeane Garofalo to drop the oddest bomb in comedian history. Okay, maybe not, but Garofalo still stole the show at the New York Comedy Festival as she admitted in front of a crowd attending The Ben Stiller Show reunion, that she was married for 20 years without fully realizing it.

How did this happen you ask? Well, it’s pretty simple in drunken logistics. Garofalo, and Rob Cohen, a writer on the aforementioned show, got drunk and then decided to get hitched in Las Vegas as a joke sometime in the early 1990s. Of course, like the best drunken blunders, the two didn’t realize that the marriage was actually legal.

“Rob and I got married, for real,” said Garofalo. She continued, “we had to have a notary dissolve not 30 minutes before we got here tonight.” She then revealed to the crowd at the New York Comedy Festival just how long they had been married, “We were married for 20 years until this evening.”

In full explanation, Garofalo elaborated about the whole messy situation, saying: “We got married drunk in Vegas. We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew? We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something.”

The couple were forced to divorce once Cohen was ready to get married for real, which is when he and Garafalo unearthed the marriage, that had lasted to their disbelief, for 20 years.
