NBC’s ‘Smash’ Adds Liza Minnelli To Its Cast

With NBC’s Smash’s premiere of Season 2 just months away, it seems as though the show is beefing up its cast as the countdown begins. Of course, news of new cast members has been trickling out since the summer. In August, The Inquisitr reported that musical heavyweights such as Jennifer Hudson and Sheryl Lee Ralph would be joining the cast of Smash.

Now NBC has announced that the show tune diva herself, Liza Minnelli, will be joining the cast to round out its roster list of guest stars that include Jesse L. Martin and Sean Hayes. While Jesse L. Martin and Sean Hayes are said to have multi-episodic arcs for this season, Minnelli, it looks like, will only be around for a guest stint.

The episode in which Liza Minnelli is expected to guest star in is titled “The Surprise Party,” which will see Minnelli appearing as, who else, none other than herself. Minnelli will sing a song during the episode with Smash series regular Christian Borle, who’s known for his background in Broadway as well.

During the announcement that Minnelli will be appearing on Smash, NBC head honcho Robert Greenblatt had this to say: “I had the pleasure of working with Liza when we restored her landmark television special Liza With a Z at Showtime, and to see her artistry up close and personal is a thing to behold.”

The Second season of Smash kicks off on February 5, 2013, and, although some of its cast has exited, the leads are still in place with Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee, Anjelica Huston, and Megan Hilty all returning. Not only will it run with a different time slot (Tuesdays at 10) but it will begin with a new head runner as well with Gossip Girl’s Josh Safran taking the reigns.
