Now that the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 2 release date for the Ais Wallenstein-based Sword Oratoria spinoff has already passed, what will happen next to Bell and Hestia? The great news is that the “real” DanMachi Season 2 anime has been officially confirmed by the light novel publisher GA Bunko along with an original movie called Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? Arrow Of The Orion. In addition, check out our latest articles about the Familia Chronicle: Episode Ryuu Gaiden series and Sword Oratoria Season 2 spoilers.
That’s the good news, but the bad news (sort of) is that the spinoff anime was not quite what many English fans of Japanese anime were expecting. Instead of being a direct sequel to Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka – or DanMachi for short – the second season for the franchise was a side story prequel called Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Sword Oratoria.
Yes, that means the second season in the overall anime series focused on what Bell Cranel’s “girlfriend” Ais has been up to ever since their fateful first encounter with the rampaging Minotaur. DanMachi manga readers were disappointed that Bell and Hestia were not the main characters but it still was a decent dungeon romp. However, the Blu-ray sales in Japan were poor when compared to other 2017 anime, so it seems unlikely J.C. Staff will make the second season of Sword Oratoria.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Sword Oratoria Now On Amazon Prime For “Free”
Way back in 2016, the Sword Oratoria trailer video was launched alongside a major update to the portal website. The official announcement from the DanMachi website says that the latest season was directed by Yohei Suzuki and the U.S. release date for the first episode was April 13, 2017.
Unfortunately, Crunchyroll did not simulcast the series for English sub-watching audiences. The Sword Oratoria anime was locked behind the Anime Strike paywall for most of 2017, but that Amazon channel was ended in early 2018. Thankfully, now all Anime Strike exclusives are free to watch for regular Amazon Prime members, including the DanMachi spinoff.
The Sword Oratoria light novels were written by Fujino Omori and illustrated by Kiyotaka Haimura. Yen Press publishes an English translation of the DanMachi light novels under the title Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side: Sword Oratoria.
DanMachi OVA Released Already In Blu-Ray Box Set
You might have missed it but anime fans were treated to an early Christmas back near the beginning of December of 2016. J.C. Staff created an Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? OVA for the anime. The DanMachi OVA release date was December 7, 2016, in Japan but finding an English sub may be difficult.

Will The ‘Real’ Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? Season 2 Please Stand Up
Back in 2015, anime fans were originally hoping DanMachi Season 2 would come out in 2016, although some predicted that a 2017 release might be inevitable. This is a common problem with any anime based on a manga, but the anime leveled up in the dungeon so quickly that the story caught up with the DanMachi light novels.
The DanMachi Season 1 finale ended in a climactic moment, with Bell defeating the goliath-level boss using his special ability. This ending also happened to correspond with the end of DanMachi Volume 5 of the light novels, which should give fans an idea of how far the story has progressed.
RELATED REPORTS BY THE INQUISITR
To put things into perspective, back in 2015 author Fujino Omori was only up to DanMachi Volume 8, but a year and a half later DanMachi Volume 11 was released on October 15, 2016. DanMachi Volume 13 was released in February of 2018, and DanMachi Volume 14 will probably come out late in 2018, but years ago the producers apparently felt there was not enough story material to justify a true continuation of the main anime storyline.
J.C. Staff must have determined that’s no longer the case. On January 15, 2018, GA Bunko announced a new project on Twitter.
“A new DanMachi project is starting!” proclaimed GA Bunko. “That means we have received notice of the campaign, but they are working on ‘something new’ because it is a new project. As soon as I can I will let you know more. For now, please wait.”
During the five-year anniversary of the series, GA Bunko officially confirmed both DanMachi Season 2 and a new feature film. Voice actors Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Inori Minase will be returning as Bell and Hestia. Artist Suzuhito Yasuda will be creating the character designs for any new characters in the film.
One major detail that the announcement left out is when both projects will release! Everyone is hoping an announcement for the DanMachi Season 2 release date will be confirmed soon, but it is known that the Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? movie will be an original story written by series creator Fujino Omori. It’s also possible the franchise could surprise us with something else besides a new anime, but so far no one has mentioned a live-action movie adaptation.
If you can’t wait to find out what happens to Bell and Hestia, the English versions of the Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Daro ka? light novel series is being published in North America by Yen Press. As of December of 2017, the official English translations have only reached Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? Volume 10, but the English DanMachi Volume 11 is expected to be released on April 24, 2018.
If you are looking for a brief summary of what happens next in the books, an older article from the Inquisitr provides DanMachi Season 2 spoilers up through Volume 8. The anime will definitely start off with a bang since Volume 6 has Apollo challenging Hestia to a War Game. Fans have speculated that JC Staff may be forced to skip or censor much of Volum 7 since the story involves Bell, brothels, and heavily sexualized themes. Anime fans will just have to wait until DanMachi Season 2 to watch how the story plays out!
DanMachi: Sword Oratoria Spoilers
The dungeon of Orario has many more mysteries than those faced by Bell. The spinoff series takes place from the perspective of the Sword Princess, Aiz Wallenstein, and the members of the Loki Familia.
Some events will be familiar to fans of DanMachi Season 1 since the two timelines intertwine fairly regularly. The beginning has the Loki Familia exploring the 59th floor and they are forced to retreat. Just like the first anime, Sword Oratoria Volume 1 contains the “boy meets girl meets minotaur” scene that jumpstarts the series, but there are more battles that were not contained within the first anime season.
Audiences will learn more about Aiz’s past and also what she thinks about her friends and certain relationships. Bell may be shipping them both in his head, but the child-like Aiz essentially treats Bell like a pet white rabbit. Worse than being friend-zoned, Bell is rabbit-zoned. Still, she begins training Bell in being a better adventurer and later on she accepts his request for her first dance.
The first several volumes are largely concerned with more exploration of both the dungeon and Aiz’s past. The Loki Familia will stumble upon a murder and they come to realize there’s a threat within the dungeon. We also get to see Aiz level up to level 6… although that’s enough to cheer her dull expression.
The Sword Oratoria anime will also develop several other DanMachi characters, including those in the Kali Familia. A new quest will have the Loki Familia searching for a second entrance to the dungeon in the port city of Melen.
The ending of the Sword Oratoria anime corresponded to the fourth volume of the Sword Oratoria light novel series. If the plot had progressed too much further, audiences would have seen a higher level Bell. If the anime spinoff ever gets a second season, Sword Oratoria Volume 7 would also make a good ending since the adventurers take on Evilus, a group of Familia led by evil Gods. (Volume 7 released on December 15, 2016, and writer Omori is already up to Volume 10 as of 2018.)
One thing is for certain: fans of the series would prefer that Bell and Hestia continue their adventure rather than watch Sword Oratoria. Let’s just hope the DanMachi Season 2 release date is not too far away!
[Update January 15, 2018] Since this article continues to be popular with readers, it was rewritten with a renewed focus on DanMachi Season 2 rather than Sword Oratoria. All information was updated based on the current date.
[Update February 19, 2018] Added official announcement, key visual, and trailer video for DanMachi Season 2.
