WWE Rumors: The Miz Outs Dean Ambrose And Renee Young’s Relationship And Gets Slapped For It, But Did He Go Off-Script?
It’s common knowledge for most wrestling fans — Dean Ambrose and Renee Young are dating and have been for quite some time. But it was still a shocker when The Miz not only revealed this relationship on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live but also used the words “you’re the one sleeping with him” when Young was interviewing him in the ring. What may be more surprising is the rumor that The Miz veered away from the script and ad-libbed that line in, much to Young’s chagrin.
Rumors about Dean Ambrose and Renee Young dating have been swirling since 2014, but it was only in March of 2015 that Renee confirmed these rumors, commenting on the matter on the Gorilla Position podcast, as cited by MTV U.K.. At that time, she chose not to say much about her relationship with Dean, while Ambrose had remained even more silent, only talking in-depth about the matter in September of that year, according to WhatCulture.
“Nah, I mean… I wouldn’t be with anything less than the optimal, most beautiful, most tremendous girl in the world,” said Ambrose, whom WhatCulture described as “one of the most private wrestlers” in recent history. “The bottom line is, she’s far too good for me.”
This year, Renee Young joined the main cast of Total Divas, with Dean Ambrose also making guest appearances in the show’s sixth season. This gave fans a closer look at their real-life relationship dynamic, while adding Dean and Renee to a list of Total Divas/Total Bellas couples that also includes John Cena and Nikki Bella, Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella, Lana and Rusev, and Natalya and Tyson Kidd. But while those real-life couples’ relationships are part of WWE storyline canon, the Dean Ambrose and Renee Young relationship was only referenced in Total Divas.
That changed on Tuesday night, however, as Young interviewed WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz on SmackDown Live. The in-ring interview started like such segments normally would, with Renee asking The Miz about his “obsession” with Ambrose, who he is feuding with for the Intercontinental belt. And while The Miz seemed to be focusing on his arrogant heel persona by reacting angrily to the question, he uttered some words that had surprised a lot of fans, and apparently Young herself.

“My obsession with Dean Ambrose? Maybe we should talk about your obsession with Dean Ambrose. I mean, after all, you’re the one sleeping with him!”
With the announcers shocked to silence, Young waited for a few seconds before slapping The Miz in the face. Even heel commentator JBL didn’t have much to say, looking as astonished as fellow announcers Mauro Ranallo, David Otunga, and Tom Phillips.
“That turned awkward pretty quick.”
With The Miz’s slapping at the hands of Renee Young still a hot topic among fans, there have been rumors that Miz had gone off-script and that the lines had legitimately upset Young. Wrestling News World wrote that “there is reason to believe” that it was an unscripted promo, although the publication said that it is still verifying backstage information as it comes in.
“We heard The Miz was seen being spoken with backstage about the promo and apparently Renee Young didn’t like the line and the original plan was for Miz to say she was the one “dating” Ambrose. One observer claimed that Renee Young felt that Miz’s line made her come off as promiscuous in front of a live television audience.”

This isn’t the first time for The Miz to blur the lines between storyline and reality on SmackDown Live this year. A few months ago, he got into a heated argument with SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack, as both men accused each other of being “cowards” for separate reasons, The Miz due to his “safe” wrestling and Bryan due to his inability to wrestle and live up to his promises of a return following his retirement.
Did The Miz go too far, and did he really upset people backstage for his allegedly unscripted remark on the Dean Ambrose and Renee Young relationship, to say little of supposedly upsetting Young for his wrong choice of words? Nothing has been confirmed, but the story is still developing and possibly heating up as we speak.
