Margot Robbie Got Married On Sunday

Margot Robbie married her longtime boyfriend Tom Ackerlay in a secret wedding ceremony in her home country of Australia on December 18.

The wedding comes as a surprise to the public since the couple had not previously announced that they were engaged. Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerlay remain tight-lipped (and perhaps lip-locked) the day after the wedding, but multiple sources have confirmed that the 26-year-old actress tied the knot with Ackerlay, also 26, in a private ceremony on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The couple has been together for three years. Tom Ackerlay works on the crew side of the film industry as an Assistant Director with multiple credits to his name. Margot Robbie became an international celebrity when she was cast alongside Hollywood legend Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street. Although predictably snubbed at the Oscars, the film grossed $392 million and solidified a spot for Robbie among Hollywood’s A-List, paving the way for her leading rolls in Tarzan and Suicide Squad.

Margot Robbie gushed about her beau in an interview with Vogue last year.

“The idea of relationships made me want to vomit. And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him.’ And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.'”

Robbie landed at the Gold Coast airport last week wearing a Yankees hat and a t-shirt with the lettering, “Say ‘I Do’ Down Under,” but Paparazzi was thrown off her trail by reports that she was simply visiting her family for the holidays. The shirt is meant to show solidarity for same-sex couples in Australia, but in hindsight it appears Robbie may have been trolling us all with a tacit admission of her actual weekend plans.

Ackerlay and Robbie married at a venue called Harvest Newrybar, an airy, weatherboard cottage on the beach in Byron Bay. The actress reportedly wanted to get married there because it’s “where she was raised as a kid, on her Grandparents’ farm.” An Australian wedding allowed the couple to be close to the bride’s family, and the couple reportedly has plans to spend time with each other’s families in time for Christmas next week.

In addition to family, Margot Robbie has a close group of friends rumored to be in attendance. The Daily Telegraph, who broke the initial story in Robbie’s native Australia, reported that Robbie’s longtime friends Julia Koenig and Aimee Myra-Smith are said to be among the wedding guests, along with Robbie’s new friend and Suicide Squad co-star Cara Delevingne.

Fans wait in anticipation to see if Robbie or Ackerlay will release photos of the ceremony and reception. So far, the only photos purported to be from the actual venue are from Tom’s brother, and don’t have any people in them.

Margot Robbie will undoubtedly continue to delight her fans in the coming years while her new husband Tom continues to work on his career as a film director. With this announcement, Robbie ends 2016 with the achievement of a personal milestone to add on to burgeoning career that has already found flourishing success for a relative newcomer in the industry.

No word yet on the next milestone, that question that is always asked to soon to the eternal chagrin of newlywed couples. But if previous interviews offer a hint, Margot Robbie has said that she would like to raise her children in Australia.
