Kate Middleton, Prince William and Prince Harry got in some pre-Christmas festivities together at a charity party December 19. Hello magazine reports that the three young royals got “into the festive spirit” for the event even though they won’t be celebrating Christmas Day together.
Kate and William decided it’s time to take Prince George and Princess Charlotte to spend the holiday with Middleton’s parents, Carole and Mike Middleton.
This is something of a break with royal tradition, and the International Business Times now reports that Kate and William are also planning on missing “Prince Philip’s traditional Boxing Day grouse shoot.” Instead, William will go with Kate to a “cut-price” shoot that Carol Middleton arranged.
It makes sense that Kate and William would want their children to be part of the Middleton’s fancy-dress Christmas Day that Pippa Middleton says is a “magical” day. Sandringham festivities are far more formal, are run according to a strict timetable, and even require “multiple changes of clothing and a black-tie dinner.”
Despite the rumblings of royal disagreements, the three royals threw themselves into the charity event with enthusiasm. William and his brother took part in breakout groups, and Kate “joined a live online chat” to talk about issues including homelessness.
The party was put on by one of the eight charities covered by Heads Together, Middleton and the princes’ mental health campaign, and Kate was “party ready” with a cheery red dress with a Christmassy green pattern.
Middleton was full of smiles, but the Daily Mail writes that Harry “looked a little glum” when he arrived at the Christmas party. He’ll be at the Queen’s Christmas Day Sandringham celebrations, but Harry’s girlfriend, Meghan Markle, won’t join him there.
The Suits actress flew back to the U.S. Monday morning, and her royal boyfriend had to say goodbye to Meghan before attending the party with Middleton and William.
Although Middleton prefers to not be part of the Sandringham Christmas formalities this year, she at least has a choice. Kate’s brother-in-law, Harry, and his girlfriend, Meghan, do not have a choice in the matter.
The young prince’s girlfriend would not be welcome at Sandringham. Only senior royals and immediate family are invited to the Queen’s Christmas dinner, and “it’s too soon in Harry’s romance” for Meghan to be welcome.
Next Christmas could be a whole different situation for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle if the rumors are true about the level of commitment in their relationship. A royal insider revealed some news about Harry and Markle to E! Online.
“Harry is more serious [about Meghan] then he ever has been about a woman before.”
The insider also confirmed that Harry has introduced Meghan to his brother William’s family. Markle met William, Kate, and little George and Charlotte during her holiday in England.
“As for Meghan coming face to face with Queen Elizabeth II, Harry hasn’t taken it quite to that level just yet.”
Markle will also miss the “traditional Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace” on Tuesday, but most of the family will join the Queen for the pre-Christmas gathering.
Prince Harry, Prince William, Prince Charles, Kate Middleton, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne, and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence will all be in attendance, as well as the low-profile youngest son of the Queen.
Prince Edward with his wife, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, and their children, Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn will join the other royals for a chance “to catch up before the monarch retreats to Sandringham Estate in Norfolk for the Christmas period.”
For Middleton and William, keeping things more casual seems to be how they like it. People magazine reports that William’s brother helped Kate and William with “making decorations and building gingerbread houses,” and young George and Charlotte are having a great time “ripping open his presents” ahead of time.
