Sting Comments On A Possible Match With The Undertaker At ‘WrestleMania 33’
For years, wrestling fans have been dying to see a match between Sting and The Undertaker, and when Sting finally arrived in WWE at the tail end of 2014, it finally looked like we were going to get a match between the two legends. But, ultimately, Vince McMahon decided to book Sting against Triple H, and not against The Undertaker.
After Sting’s loss to Triple H at WrestleMania 31, fans were hopeful that WWE would book him in a match with The Undertaker at the following year’s WrestleMania 32, but The Icon suffered what we would later learn was a career-ending neck injury during a match with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions.
Sting officially announced his retirement from professional wrestling during his WWE Hall of Fame induction speech earlier this year, but in interviews following the event — most notably during his appearance on the WWE Network show Legends with JBL— it was clear that he doesn’t want his career to be over, and that he still wants to have a match with The Undertaker.
During an interview on the Talking Cowboys podcast, Sting was asked if he’ll return to the ring for a match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33, and, in short, his answer was no. But, that’s not because he’s not interested in doing so, it’s more because the WWE doctors probably won’t allow him to have another match due to the neck injury he suffered last fall.
“I think wrestling fans, it’s a dream match for them, it’s a dream match for me too, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.”
Before his neck injury, WWE reportedly didn’t have any plans of doing a match between Sting and The Undertaker. So, even if he would’ve avoided getting hurt in the match against Rollins, we probably wouldn’t have ever seen The Icon step inside the ring with The Deadman.
According to Give Me Sport, the original plan for Sting at WrestleMania 32 was for him to go up against Bray Wyatt, which is another match that WWE fans were dying to see.
Nobody really knows why WWE was so against doing a Sting vs. Undertaker match. For years, WWE chairman Vince McMahon has claimed that if the fans want to see something, he’ll make it happen, even if he doesn’t necessarily agree with it. Of course, you can find tons of examples where he didn’t give the fans what they wanted when they wanted it, but you can also find plenty of examples where he did.
Instead of giving the fans the long awaited dream match with The Undertaker upon his arrival, WWE gave them Sting vs. Triple H, which was a match that no one really talked about as a “dream match.” Sure, the two had never been in the ring with each other before, but no one really ever talked about a potential match between Sting and Triple H prior to The Icon’s arrival in WWE.
Most would agree that WWE dropped the ball on Sting from the moment that he debuted in the company. But, despite that, Sting has spoken highly about WWE management, and he doesn’t have any issues with how he was used during his short run there.
We haven’t seen Sting on WWE television since he announced his retirement back on the Hall of Fame, and it’s unclear if we’ll ever see him again.
As of this writing, Sting has put off getting neck surgery, because he still has faith that WWE will call him up, and ask him if he’s interested in wrestling The Undertaker. Sadly, it doesn’t look like he’ll ever get that call.
