‘We Got A Stack Of Letters From Idiots’: Unbound Electorates Say They Are Still Voting For Trump

Despite a movement led by Democrats to encourage unbound electorates to vote against their constituency for popular vote winner Hillary Clinton, a new study suggests that President-elect Donald Trump has nothing to worry about. The study found that just one Republican elector is ready to defect, claiming that efforts to oust Trump from the ticket is a “losing bet.” In fact, it seems the pressure on electors may be strengthening their resolve to vote for Trump.

The New York Post reports that the Associated Press polled 330 of the 538 members of the Electoral College and found that just one Republican is ready to defect by voting against Trump. With Trump presumably winning 309 electorates, 39 more than needed to secure the presidency, it seems that the president-elect has nothing to worry about come December 19 when the electors meet to place their official votes.

Perhaps more interesting than the straight numbers regarding the Republican electors prepared to place a vote for Trump is the fact that their resolve to vote for the businessman seems to be increasing rather than decreasing. In fact, some staunch anti-Trump electors have noted they will honor the will of their constituency by placing a ballot for the man they opposed throughout the election.

Jim Skaggs, an elector from Kentucky, notes that despite not caring for President-elect Trump, he will be casting a ballot for him.

“I fully intend to vote for Donald Trump. I think it is a duty.”

Other Republicans have noted that the efforts by Democrats are failing because they are coming off as automated and too coordinated. Edward Robson of Phoenix says that the “stack of letters from idiots” is not changing his mind.

“We got a stack of letters from idiots.”

Given that the movement would need to encourage 40 electors to make an unprecedented move against the voting populace, it seems that the chances of the Electoral College undermining their constituency are very slim. Even Bret Chiafalo, one of the anti-Trump movement leaders, acknowledges that the whole idea is a “losing bet.” However, that hasn’t stopped 50 electors, that includes just one Republican, to ask that unbound electors defect and that the vote be pushed back so that all members of the Electoral College can be given special security clearance to be briefed on issues regarding the potential Russian influence over the U.S. presidential election.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, Christine, is leading the movement to have the Electoral College briefed on Russia before their votes are placed. Christine Pelosi, an elector for California, says that it is vital that the electors be briefed on potential Russian interference in the election as it may prove that President-elect Donald Trump is unfit to serve as president.

The movement has to realize that the demands will likely not change the results of the election as the Business Insider reports there have only been eight electors to act as a “faithless elector” since 1900. With the movement needing 40 electors to vote as a faithless elector, it seems highly improbable that anyone but Donald J. Trump will be president come January 20.

To further press his belief that there is no way possible that the Democrats will be able to pull off blocking Trump via the Electoral College, Tom Lawless, an elector for Tennessee, says hell will freeze over before he changes his vote.

“Hell will freeze and we will be skating on the lava before I change.”

What do you think about the Democrat-led effort to block a Trump presidency via the Electoral College?
